Random Thoughts: School Nurses

Published

Random Thoughts about School Nursing not juicy enough for their own topic start here!

My mantra lately: "Wash your HANDS, go back to CLASS and cover your COUGH!"

sent out a letter for all the kindergarten students that they should have an extra pair of clothes in their backpacks just in case (mostly because I see the same students over and over again about accidents). Just now I got one who purposefully does it for attention and there are no clothes.

I am getting better at sniffing out the kids who come in with a made up story, trying to get a pass.

This one right here smells suspicious.:cautious:

Nope- this kid wanted me to sign the pass that his teacher had already signed for him to come see me. My teachers rarely ask kids why they come to see me. The kids just has to say "Can I go see the nurse?" and BOOM the pass is written without any questions as to why.

Well, yea, of course. Better us than them, right?

And the teachers that just send students. Student arrives stating "he/she said to just come." Um, who is he/she? Ugh. I used to send out reminders about passes. Now I figure out which teachers are the worst offenders and just stick nurse's passes in their mailbox until point is made.

I just got a call from a teacher asking, "can you tell me what the current outdoor temperature is and what does it need to be to take the kids outside?"

#1) Do I look like Al Roker??

#2) Should I just pull a random number from my *&(#? I didn't know there was a specific "safe" temp in which we could/should take kids outside. We're in the south for Pete's sake. Is it ever too cold to take these precious snowflakes outside??

We tell parents that unless raining or below 15 degrees, your kids will be outside, dress accordingly. So my son wears shorts all winter, looks great, right? Our teachers check their weather app. We sometimes have lunch outside when it is above freezing (no cafeteria). Love when they have outdoor recess, I am usually pretty busy for that hour.

Good lord, who in this day and age doesn't have a weather app or some such thing to look at? I have google weather as a pin on my laptop. Also, we do have a stated temp where recess is moved indoors, but I can't recall the number right now. I think its -10. We are a pretty hardy group, cold is a way of life. Our handbook actually has that shorts are not allowed from Oct. 15th - April 15th.

Oh yea, that dress code part of the handbook, grumbles the butt cheek police.

Why, after 4 years am I still telling the same exact teachers that I eat lunch from 1:15-1:45 and not to send kids for silly stuff during that time???? And yes, a 3 day old sore finger IS SILLY STUFF!!!

And why am I (and the kid's dad) telling the exact same teachers that there is no need for their student with no health problems to come to the nurse every day multiple times for silly stuff??? This is his 3rd year here and he is on visit 179. But yet........... here he comes again and I see no bones poking out or no blood spurting from any orifice.

One of my biggest pet peeves! Some of the kids are told that and some are just liars, they are coming from bathroom or never went to class in the first place, which to me is why passes are so important!!

I give them a stack of passes with a little note attached to take back to their teachers that reads:

Always send student with a completed pass. The pass needs full name, date, time and your initials. This is what I use for documentation and for attendance purposes. Even if they come for a safety pin, pad, contact lens solution – they need a pass!!!

Are you asking what happened with my kid? Grandmother (guardian) came to get him. His RR rate came down to 20 and HR was in the 90s after about 15 minutes. BP was 120/80-ish the whole time. If he didn't resolve so quickly, I would have called rescue instead of waiting for grandmother. He was literally begging me to stay in school. It might have had something to do with the girlfriend. I recommended gram get him checked out and she said they were headed straight to the doctor's office.

An hour or so later I had another student found unresponsive in the bathroom. Is there something in the water? Is it a full moon? Is it vacation yet?!?!

Did they do a tox screen @ MD?
