Random Thoughts about School Nursing not juicy enough for their own topic start here!
My mantra lately: "Wash your HANDS, go back to CLASS and cover your COUGH!"
I have only done it in desperation. If a child is really sick or hurt. Both times, the parent had ignored if it was the school number but picked up with the cell. I just find it interesting.
I don't use my personal cell to call parents, but I have used phones belonging to the counselors. Parents will answer the calls from them faster then they will from the school phones. I guess they know it's the nurse or the principal and those calls most always require the parent getting up and coming to school, but the counselors call for things the parents don't have to actually have to put forth effort.
i won't use my cell phone to call those that don't answer. I have been known to use my lesser known telephone fax line, but i try to use that sparingly. I discussed with my IT guy the idea of a google phone number - apparently that's a thing - but i still don't think i totally understand that concept.
I am provided a school cell phone; Iphone. I'm findiing that I get more responses from a text than a call. I understand it's easier for some parents to answer a text from work than receive a phone call. I frequently use it to send pictures of bumps, lacs, scrapes, rashes, etc to parents. That's a lot easier than trying to provide a description.
Why will a coach allow a kid with a head injury to sit with a 10 pound bag of ice with no barrier on it for 48 minutes and then send to class but they refer a 1 drop of blood on a Kleenex from a nose directly to me with no pass (because it is deemed an emergency)?????????????? No amount of education seems to change the mindset either!!! I think I may bang my head against a wall until I get a concussion (or better yet, a mild nosebleed) so that I can go home.

I use my personal phone, as my number is in the parent directory. Haven't thought of the picture thing, thanks Old Dude! Love being able to text, parents can often see my text at work and decide if it is worthwhile.

indeed there is... from what you vented, mc3 i'd have made a report - if nothing else out of clear principle.
I'm just going to get on my soapbox for a moment - at what point did civil servant equate to verbal punching bag? Why is it common place to have to make 6 phone calls to send a child home when every person carries a small telephone on their hip? Do people not realize that we CAN TELL when they reject the call and send us to voice mail after a few rings?
