I like the ER and we always get our share of psych issues... boy -oh-boy, do I respect you....we NEED you....so many people with psych issues and so few people on their team....bless you in your chosen path....you will do GOOD WORK....your bubbly, happy personality is the GIFT you bring to the table, and may also serve yourself as protection for the hard times...may all your dreams come true....
take every Pysch Class that you Can.... I work in LTC. and Abnormal pysch was the best class I ever took.... Some one asked me why I did so well in that section. and I said I either was related to some one or worked with some one that Had that disorder.... Its easyer to remember them when you can put a face on them.
I Hated med surg rotation as well. I will never be a med surge nurse. I went into nursing to be a Nurse in LTC. I feel that is a very undeserved area
I like psych much better than med surg. I've done both, but psych is where my heart lies. After your clinical in psych, you'll be better informed to make a good decision for yourself. You might be surprised. It could firm you ideas or completely change them. I went into nursing school wanting to be an OB nurse, but changed that idea during OB clinicals. Wait and see what happens!
I agree that getting extra education in psych is a good thing, although the book-learning is only a drop in the bucket to let you know what it's really like.
Just read a very good book - - Hurry Down Sunshine - - a true story of the breakdown of a teenager, told from her father's point of view. Read it, it may give you some insight as to what to expect about certan issues.
But don't throw away all the knowledge and skills you've learned in med-surg - you really don't know what is in store for you in the future.
Best wishes for your future!
Its always great to hear about new nurses interested in psych but keep an open mind until you have experienced all the different clinical experiences. I was pretty sure I didn't want to do med surge either but wasn't sure I wanted to do psych until after two psych rotations. Psych nurses tend to get a bad rap by those without a clue so you will need to develop a thicker skin if you are going to be concerned with people "raining on my parade". I'd also suggest treading really lightly with your boyfriend if you are still together because as tempting as it may be to identify his condition he might not apreciate your exciting new found knowledge. Good luck.
I think we all come into this profession looking and seeking different paths. And we are all lucky that we have so many avenues to choose from. I totally and fully respect you for the path that you have decided to take, because it is what you seek and will make you happy. I have full respect for those nurses, as well, who spend their careers in the field of med/surg. None of these paths are easy.....because it takes special people to fill each role. Just remember your calling and follow your path. You'll do wonderful!
