Rady Children's New Grad RN Residency Summer 2019

Published

Hey all! Just wanted to start a thread for those who are applying for the RN new grad program at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego for the Summer 2019 cohort so we can update each other about what's going on! Good luck to everyone!

I have not heard anything back yet but I graduated from a BSN program December 2018 in Tennessee, I have passed the NCLEX and started the transfer process on my license to CA, I moved to San Diego a month ago, I did an internship in a level 3 NICU for a year during nursing school, worked as a nurse intern at a children’s hospital for a year during school, volunteered at the children’s hospital, I have PALS and NRP, and I also have personal experience in the NICU as a parent (my son was born at 30 weeks). I don’t know what else I could possibly do to make myself a more competitive applicant if I do not hear anything back. No email, no phone call as of yet so I will consider that a good thing for now.

Anyone know when the next round is supposed to be?

I received an email today from HR that stated that my application was not selected for interview because the critical care units which I had selected (PICU & NICU) selected were focusing their efforts on those who had completed their senior preceptorship in the PICU or the CVICU. Feeling bummed that my practicum on the Pediatrics Unit did not count ? feeling super defeated.

Wishing you guys the best of luck! Will be applying next round.

I haven’t gotten this email yet, but if that is the case, I guess I have to assume the worst then. Wish I had know I could of applied to 2 units!

ED had me send my top 3 time slots for the interview but I’m wondering if anyone who also applied to ED has gotten a time confirmation?

Can I ask what experiences/certifications you have? Just wondering what made you stand out for an interview so I can look better for the next round! ?

I never got an email or phone call so I called HR and they asked for my name and told me my application was not selected to move forward. So if you are really wanting to know go ahead and call HR to find out. Not sure what else could possibly be added to my resume besides graduating from a California program to make my chances better. Oh well I guess. Good luck everyone!

Did anyone hear anything from the CVICU/ACU yet?

I just happened to see this thread when searching for answers regarding when we may hear back for the new grad residency for this summer. I graduated from the University of Michigan in December and moved here in January, and applied for NICU and ED, but I've heard nothing yet. I'm really happy for those of you who have heard back with good news so far. I'd like to at least have AN answer soon, whatever it may be!

I'm genuinely curious as to what led so many to the decision to move to California from another state without a job lined up when the job market in hospitals as a new grad is so difficult. I'm originally from cali but hesitant about moving back and risk having to settle for a nursing home job because I am set on working in a hospital and I've had better luck getting interviews from hospitals out of state. I could not imagine moving to a state with such a high cost of living without any security of finding a nursing job I actually want so kudos to you guys who are brave enough to risk it all for the chance of finding a job in cali

I was thinking this same thing. Really want to move there but thinking I should stay in my hometown where I already have a job lined up.

I moved here because my husband is in the Navy and we were stationed in San Diego. My only option is to get a job in this area. I’m sure majority of people are originally from here or have family here.

We are East Coasters originally but moved here almost 8 years ago for my husband's job. So our children are pretty much born and raised here and we've settled in. It would be a lot easier to get a job in my original hometown but this is where we call home now. It's like anything else: supply and demand. There are a TON of people that call SoCal their home, and for us with pediatric focuses, not a lot of options. Most small, private hospitals don't have pediatric units here because Rady is comprehensive. I also think people are more willing to commute further distances to jobs because they expect to. If you have a job lined up out of state, and you have the flexibility to live where you'd like, then I recommend getting experience before moving here. I heard it's much easier with experience to land a job than one of the coveted new grad positions. Good luck to all still waiting!

Hi all! I applied to NICU and PICU. Called HR this morning and said my application was not selected to move forward. I'm a military spouse and we're stationed here for the next 2 years at least, so I'll keep trying. But trust me, if you have any choice in the matter and you're considering moving to San Diego, don't do it. Get experience somewhere else first. Good luck to everyone!
