A facebook friend who is a nurse posted this....I had to post it here! I'm not a nurse but LOVE them, and I thought some of you would like this!
"You're a nurse?? That's cool, I wanted to do that when I was a kid. What do you make?"....."WHAT DO I MAKE?!"
I make holding your hand seem like the most important thing in the world when you're scared. I can make your child breathe when they stop. I can help your father survive a heart attack. I make myself get out of bed at 5am to make sure your mother has the medicine she needs to live. I sometimes work a 16 hour day to save the lives of strangers. I make my family wait for dinner until I know your family member is taken care of. I make myself skip lunch so that I can make sure that everything I did for your husband today is charted. I make myself work weekends and holidays because people don't just get sick Monday thru Friday. Today, I might save your life. I make a difference. What do you make?"

Yup, these are all over FB with different careers as topics. All very applicable for the career they are talking about.

I make my way to work before a natural disaster, abandoning my home, family and pets to care for your loved one.... I may get one phone call during the blizzard or after the earthquake by a family member asking " Are you ok-I was thinking about you-thanks for taking care of my mom' Not that it is expected,of course.I do get paid and fed and I get to stay in a safe place for the duration so that is thanks enough

This is truly inspirational! This is why I love nursing and why I am proud to be a nursing student and CNA.

Bleh. I kind of think that kind of stuff is silly.
Someone recently asked why everyone thinks nursing is such a glamorous job and everyone is clamoring to go to nursing school.
Glurge like that FB post is why.
Sorry.
at least I didn't call anyone a butthead, right?

I saw that on FB too and thought it was a nice tribute to nursing. Our profession is often misunderstood and downplayed to be "just" a doctor's handmaiden with no real knowledge or contribution to the healing process. Plus, nurses are the catch all for any patient complaints whether it be regarding the cleanliness of the room, bad food, the lighting, lack of cable, etc. We deserve a little credit now and then!

Nursing is how I make a living, it's not who I am.
Don't stone me, or call me a butthead.
I love my job and I am excellent at it.
There is no ivory tower at my workplace. I work hard, I'm underpaid, we are short staffed, some of my assignments have been totally unmanageable and nobody was harmed only by the grace of god. Since I take it and don't complain, I get rewarded with social nightmares and the sickest patients. In my sick and twisted mind that's reward enough.
I know I do a good job, that's enough for me.
I don't want people to think that I have an inflated ego or think I'm Susie the wonder nurse. I'm just an RN, a regular nurse.
I separate myself from my job, otherwise I would get burned out if I took all that mess home with me.

I used to be a NICU nurse, if I had a dollar for every time I heard what a special angel I was for saving sick babies I would be able to retire.
I'm going rogue, I'm going to have to get a new screen name.
My husband gets that a lot too (he's a hospice nurse). I just call him the Angel of Death.
I'm sure you also saw your share of babies that probably shouldn't be saved.
