"You're a NURSE??"

Nurses General Nursing

Published

‎A facebook friend who is a nurse posted this....I had to post it here! I'm not a nurse but LOVE them, and I thought some of you would like this!

"You're a nurse?? That's cool, I wanted to do that when I was a kid. What do you make?"....."WHAT DO I MAKE?!"

I make holding your hand seem like the most important thing in the world when you're scared. I can make your child breathe when they stop. I can help your father survive a heart attack. I make myself get out of bed at 5am to make sure your mother has the medicine she needs to live. I sometimes work a 16 hour day to save the lives of strangers. I make my family wait for dinner until I know your family member is taken care of. I make myself skip lunch so that I can make sure that everything I did for your husband today is charted. I make myself work weekends and holidays because people don't just get sick Monday thru Friday. Today, I might save your life. I make a difference. What do you make?"

My husband gets that a lot too (he's a hospice nurse). I just call him the Angel of Death.

I'm sure you also saw your share of babies that probably shouldn't be saved.

Yeppers, so depressing.

Ugh, asking someone's salary is completely the height of rudeness. It drives me crazy even when the nursing students ask it here. I know why they ask, but it's an uncomfortable question no matter what the reason is.

"Well, new grads start out at only $100, 000 per year...but that's for the ones that only want to work M-f on the day shift...the experienced ones make a whole lot more... " :jester:

Bleh. I kind of think that kind of stuff is silly.

Someone recently asked why everyone thinks nursing is such a glamorous job and everyone is clamoring to go to nursing school.

Glurge like that FB post is why.

Sorry.

at least I didn't call anyone a butthead, right?

Why do you sound so disgruntled? I thought the whole thing was really heart warming and inspirational. It is true what's related in the post! Most of us Nurses do put our lives on hold and make sacrifices to ensure positive outcomes for our patients/clients minute by minute. It might sound frivolous because it is written in a poetic form but it is the reality for most of us. Whoever wrote it, echoes the sentiments of many of us hardworking, self sacrificing nurses. I don't consider myself any better or more self-sacrificing than any other working joe (or jane, as the case may be). Especially the last sentence "What did YOU do today??" or whatever it was. It reeks of self-congratulation and martyrdom. I certainly don't hold that sentiment.

ETA: Sorry, it was: "I made a difference today. What did you make?"

Hey OP, you forgot to mention how we forego the trip to the bathroom again so we can help your loved one with their BR needs :D

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs doesn't apply to nurses. I often use nurses as an example of why Maslow was dead wrong.

This is taken from Taylor Mali 's "What Teachers Make" poem. His spoken-word performance can be seen on YouTube. A shame the poster passed this off as his own without having the decency to give credit where credit was due.

i see alllll kinds of nursing related posts on facebook. this type of posts get on my nerves a lot for some reason. i don't like that the word "nurse/nursing" are in everybody's mouth like it's a gum. do you all ever see engineers, bankers, teachers, and other careers being advertised overwhelmingly like this? i don't.

"right now, there is a nurse being yelled, spit, ...............missing her family while taking care of/saving yours" goodness, nothing but drama. this type of things in my opinion only causes people to pity nurses. hey, this is not a lifestyle. this is a career nurses choose to do, and we get paid for it. we don't make sacrifice for anybody's interest, it is our job to take care of people, and we do it. many people proudly post this type of things on facebook, and i respect that. it is just me who hates it.

op, sorry if i got off the topic a little bit. please don't think i flamed you or something. i just couldn't help and vented when i read it. :)

I came into nursing rather late in life, and while I am proud of the profession I've chosen and the work that I perform, I don't really consider it to be above most any other job I've done. Yea, it may be portrayed in media as glamorous(even if it ain't) and we do have an immediate impact on people's lives. But really, is this profession any more generous or altruistic than a garbage man? Or the plumber who fixes our busted sewer line? How about the lineman who works in a pouring thunderstorm to replace the blown transformer? All these jobs add to the "quality of life", even as nurses are instructed to do.

I appreciate the desire to congratulate ourselves once in a while for the work we do and the stress and crud we put up with, and while the world would be a lesser place without us, the same can be said for any number of other professions. I don't want a pedestal to stand on, just respect for a job well done.

Hmm...Would be interesting to read the posts at "allgarbageman.com".:twocents:

Sounds kind of chicken-y soup-ish. My feeling is that the minute I start patting myself on the back for how "wonderful" I am, that is the moment I'm paying so much attention to myself that I'm not paying attention to the patient. And that is when bad things happen.
