this was my comment Are you crazy? The the term nurse is protected by law.If the term was not protected I would not call myself a nurse. I am a cna now and a nursing student I would never call myself a nurse I have not earned that title yet. When I complete my educatation and pass my nclex only then can I call myself a nurse. Untill I have completed these requirements I am not a nurse!!!!!

That was funny. I would love.....and I mean love to get that MA in the ICU or ER with me for just 1 hour. I live in the same area as her, I'll keep my eye open for her. I'll be on the hunt like a tiger. I usually don't make mince meat of people , but I would have to sharpen my skills of the "mean" critical care RN for her. If this MA ever reads posts here, bring it on !

I just get all warm and fuzzy feelings for Pharm Gal... gotta luv her....
yeah... she can call herself a nurse.. after insanity called nursing school, passing the that big ole mean nasty test, being crapped on by much older, more bitter nurses (I can say that... I earned my title..lol... and I call em like I see em..lol... )
Dealing with horrid NA's, and then again some absolutely incredible NA's and other nurses, and lest you should forget some of the most brutal doctors who suffer short man's disease, and those who well are just plain asses, when she runs her legs off, throws out her back, cries with the families, hold hands of those who have died, try to comfort a grieving mother whose child just died in her arms....and the both of you just cry together. When she can stand up to a doctor when he is bring a pardon the mean old word... "prick", come to work after getting your clocked cleaned by a patient... whose combative and your trying to keep them from pulling their chest tubes out, or riding a gurney doing chest compressions on one of your own co-workers wondering how in the hell your ACLS training came back up instantly in your mind.. even though your due for renewal next month.... the endless bedpans, bed changes, med passes, education days.. wooo hooo my favorite, JACHO survey's, being cheerful walking into a hospice patients room knowing that if you had to, you could lift this woman and carry her around with you wither away as you feed her, change all of her dressings which takes two hours, and by the time you got done with that.. it was time to start the dressing change all over again. I can go on and on and on..... yet still you wake up... put on those scrubs and go to work with a smile on your face.. because you LOVE what you do.......
she reminds of a few students I have been around... that by ohhhh... 2nd day into their practicum... are crying because it isn't what they told them it would be... they were suppossed to be doing the paperwork..LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.... ... LMAO... have fun hunny!!!
BIG hugs for the Pharm Gal...

I laughed my a$$ off. I am in nursing school, ADN, at my school the first day we are told NEVER EVER even refer to ourselves, especially out in the clinicals, as anything but students. Not student nurses, or RN students, students. The reasoning behind this, our instructors work(ed) as REAL nurses and they know if a patient hears the word nurse, they don't hear any other part of the phrase. Nurse can fix this, nurse can do what I need, nurse knows what she is doing.
Student is learning, student needs assistance, student needs overseeing, student needs guidance.
These older but wiser instructors also told us that is the VERY REASON why
Certified Nursing Aides
Medical Assistants
do not have the word NURSE in them. People associate the word Nurse with knowledge, not that CNA's and MA's are not knowledgeable about their areas of health care, they are not, nor will they ever be NURSES.
More power to the people who turn in the impostors.....BRAVO

Thanks for the laugh. Thank God "nurse" is protected by law. Somehow I don't think this "girl" has the critical thinking skills to make it past 1st semester of nursing school.

[color=deepskyblue]this was great! thanks! you know, the clinics do not help this either. the clinics (who are owned by the hospital) have on their "nurses line" ~you've reached the nurses line. please hold and a nurse will be with you shortly~ well, i know very well that there are no nurses there, well, except the aprn, but i don't think she'll be answering my call. i know no rn's or lpn's are employed there because my mother is the clinic manager who happens to be a ma with years of experience. not one time have i heard her call herself a nurse, in fact, my young cousin said to my mom one day, "well sabrina's mommy is a nurse now just like you" my mom replied, "no, i am not a nurse, i am a medical assistant. being a nurse is so much more of an accompolishment". i am not saying that ma's can't be valuable to a clinic, sure they are, but they are not nurses.

It's funny that you mention that they thought they would just have to do paperwork.
I chose the nursing profession because I would be actually working with the patients and having contact with them. I worked in therapy (mostly Occupational, as a tech) for a year and a half because I wanted to go to school for physical therapy. That was until I saw what the PT's I worked with really did. They would do the initial eval, make up a plan and then document it. My job was to carry out the plan and report any changes to the Therapist. The Therapist, after the eval, had very little contact with the patient at all which is not what I wanted.
As a degreed professional, I want to use my knowledge and actually have contact with my patients. That is why I am in nursing school. I'm a tech right now and I can't wait until I graduate and I can call myself a nurse and I'll say it with pride.
The day you described is how my day goes now as a tech. I don't do dressing changes but I assist. Some days I have patients that will have multiple BM's and need cleaned at least every hour if not sooner but you know what? It keeps me on my toes and I love it. I have also consoled the families of dying patients and cried along with them. Even though I am a tech, I still have limited interactions with doctors and I know what you mean about "short man syndrome".
It's right. Even if we have a bad day at work, we still wake up, put our scrubs on, and go to work with a smile on our faces because we truly do LOVE what we do!!!!!!!!
Awesome post!
