For those of you that use a pyxis and have to put in your un/pw everytime someone else needs to waste something how rigerous are you on actually watching the wastage?
We had a situation come up where I used to work of one nurse stealing narcs, mostly dilaudid but she would also take anything else she could get her hands on, she would get witnesses she knew wouldn't watch her waste thank god I'm a watcher because now the nurses that are on record as wasting with her often are now under suspicion. It was one of those situtations where you NEVER would have suspected this nurse.
Just word of advice, always watch !

Thanks for the reminder.
It's easy to get lax about it, b/c we just don't think it's going to happen...

Question regarding pixis. When you only need a partial dose does your pixis require the witness entry before it will dispense the drug?? I'm working at a hospital were the pixis(new to the facility) makes you sign out the full dose, exit and then go back in to record the waste. Previously used pixis's I've used ask you if your going to give the full dose, you say yes or no, then it prompts you to put in witness info.
This system the way it is looks pretty lax since it allows you to sign out the drug and walk away without recording the waste.
Insight???

I agree....
I tend to watch, but if I'm in a hurry....sometimes I am not as careful as I should be:imbar
But I have another question....where do you think the "waste" should go-the sink or in a sharp box? I do my waste over the sink....and send it down the drain.

Ours always go down the drain. Still new at this pyxis stuff, so still learning here....

ON the other side of the coin, I MAKE SURE MY WASTES ARE SEEN BY THE CO-SIGNER......Always!!!!!!!
Sometimes, people will just wave and say "ok" when I say I am about to waste something...and I insist they watch me......
that way, NO BODY can say I am not on the "up and up"
it's very important to me that anytime I deal with narcotics (and other matters of nursing involving personal accountability and integrity) that people KNOW I am being truthful and honest. Trust is very important to me. I leave no room for doubt, ever.:)

Good post for a reminder. I always make sure someone watches my wastes and into the sink and rinsed down, don't want any weird suspicions somewhere down the road!!! And is anyone else ever able to smell the Morphine . Most of them think I'm nuts when I say it has a very distinctive smell!?

Smilingblueeyes you took the words right out of my mouth. I am absolutely anal about this watching and being watched.

Has anyone else noticed that when you go back to waste the drug the person who took it out could have easily drawn up water into the MS syringe? Unless you watch them from the time they take it out until the waste anything could be going down the sink.
