No need to feel bad for doing nothing for a few hours especially if the opportunity rarely arises. It is okay to shut your brain off for a few hours and do nothing. Sometimes that is all it takes to get back into the swing of things. Don't feel guilty.
But..... to anwser your question.....
If I find myself having some down time, I will look up some good recipes online, go to the store, and plan a nice dinner :)
As rare as that happens...I tend to put up on Facebook that I'm looking for a friend that's free at this very moment - who's game for shopping, lunch/dinner, mani/pedi, or just coffee. That's my M.O. If I can't find someone to chat with then I'll head for a coffee, window shopping, and iPod alone time...or people watching or a phone call to my mom...I have LOTS to do but I live in a major city.
I go to the movies by myself, usually really bad scary movies. The last movie that I saw was Piranha 3D and IT ROCKED!
LOL I thought Piranha was ABSURD!
I love movies though and go a lot. My oldest son is my Scary movie partner because my husband loathes horror movies. Last one we saw was Insidious.
I have free hours all the time so I can't say I do anything special I do get a massage every week to 2 weeks. But it's more a necessity than a luxury. I watch WAY TO MUCH TV.
If it is in the evening, long hot bath with self pampering girlie stuff and reading for pleasure.
Day/afternoon - I record shows I never get to watch anymore but enjoy, like Sex In The City reruns, Say Yes To The Dress and other mental fluff like that. I'll make myself a decadent homemade soup and veg out.
I rarely have friends available when i am, but I have been known to hit the movies alone or go shopping as well, but usually I find either of those to add to my exhaustion.

I love/ Hate this problem... I love that I occasionally have unexpected guilt-free downtime (Which I refuse to use to study). However I HATE when I finally decide what to do, I find out- the pool is closed, friends are busy, it's raining, and an empty wallet etc' ... so I plonk myself infront of the TV and "veg" out for hours, then feel empty about it in the end.
Oh, maybe I should mention that i'm just venting... long day... Pharmacology final over and done with this morning.
But I am curious as to what other ppl manage to do in their unexpected downtime....
