Curious: Is anyone here a job/OT addict? How many PRN/PT jobs and overtime hours do you think is over the top?
And for those of you with more than one job, are they all in the same specialty?
How many hours do you work at your FT job and how many hours do you work at your PRN job(s)?
I used to work with a woman who has five kids. She works full time at one spot but then also has three PRN jobs. Every time she would quit a job, she would go contingent. Now, she has collected four jobs (all in the same specialty).
As for me, I have one FT job in one specialty and a PRN job. I will be out of town for a bit and have signed up for a nine straight days of work! Thankfully, they are a mixture of twelves and eights.
Oops.
For most of my career, I had at least a 2-3 jobs; mostly for the variety of being in different specialties; this is the first time in my career that I am working in one specialty, and I worked a ton of overtime.
I only work overtime certain time of the year; usually late spring-late summer.
Last year I had to make sure one of nieces who is a dancer could make it to LA for a dance intensive with Debbie Allen, plus I wanted to go to London with my fiancé and wanted to be comfortable enough that when I returned I had money. I worked 50-60 hrs/week.
This year she got into the Harlem Ballet-I was able to help her pay for that w/o overtime; one of my other nieces rides horses and is learning polo and equestrian showmanship-I help her get the items she needed for polo; another needed items for her photography exhibit, another is a college student. My youngest niece also dances.
I also have a stepdaughter that I help out with.
I also love to travel.
I am able to provide help for these expenses, pay a mortgage, a timeshare, and still live comfortably.
I don't do overtime right now-too cold and I want to be home; but when the time comes I'll probably will do 50-60 hrs for a shorter time his year; I may pick up a PRN, only because I want to diversify my specialty-I work in a Pedi ER, but so want to at work with adults PRN-but I may wait another year or so; but it will only be by choice.
You can't assume that people are doing it to pay for toys all the time. I am single, have a mortgage plus a private loan to pay plus two kids in university. I really don't have any luxuries and I work my butt off.
I never doubted that - I'm just pointing out the other side of the coin. I was a single mom, too - never did OT because I couldn't even find the extra childcare, let alone afford it.

Of course not and I respect that. This thread isn't directed to those who have to work that many hours but to those who choose to do so.
Plus I am curious just how common it is for nurses to work multiple jobs and so many hours.

I have only worked overtime, perhaps three or four times within the last 6 years. It is simply not something that I choose to do, and there are plenty of takers instead of me.
I have two employers. One is a full time teaching job at a local college in the nursing program, and the other is on call at the hospital so that I can keep my CCRN, and keep my skills sharp.
