Corona virus misinformation:quantifying sources and themes in the COVID-19‘ infodemic’

Quote

Abstract:

The COVID19 pandemic has unfolded along side what the World Health Organization has termed an “infodemic” of misinformation. This study identifies and analyzes the most prominent topics of COVID related misinformation that emerged in traditional media between January  1 and May 26,2020  based on a total sample of over 38 million articles published in English-language media around the world.  To our knowledge, our analysis is the first comprehensive survey of the traditional and online media landscape on this issue. We found that media mentions of US President Donald Trump within the context of COVID-19 misinformation made up by far the largest share of the infodemic. Trump mentions comprised 37.9% of the overall misinformation conversation, well ahead of any other topics. We conclude that the President of the United States was likely the largest driver of the COVID-19 misinformation “infodemic”. Only 16.4% of the misinformation conversation was “fact-checking” in nature, suggesting that the majority of COVID misinformation is conveyed by the media without question or correction.

Ben Carson just tested positive.  Apparently he attended an indoor party on election night and you can bet there was no social distancing and masks.  I wish him well but for a doctor he should be ashamed of himself for not taking precautions, but he lost his mind a long while ago.

My take on "that it would go away" , is that the way the media covers it and the way Democrats politicians talk about it and make policies will change.

We shall see.

Trump's family and some of his inner circle have been promoting the idea that Covid is no big deal and the threat is largely hyped in an effort to hurt Trump. I think it's possible they actually believe that, because they warned that once Trump was defeated, the supposed non-issue would evaporate.

What we've heard from Biden in the last few days certainly put the lie to that theory.

Today Trump alleged that the Democrats, the FDA and Pfizer conspired to keep the lid on their vaccine news in an effort to sabotage his chances of winning.

I would expect the Democrats will certainly talk about that differently than his staunch supporters. If he continues in this vein, I would hope even they would peel off for the sake of the country.

Not from my perspective.   Do you ever hear them talk about how many more tests are being done, anyone who wants a test can get one.  Or that number of deaths isn't increasing?  No. It's all doomsday headlines.

I could go on, but I'll just agree to disagree.  And, we'll see.

True, more mask wearing in this crowd I'm sure.

At the same time, stricter guidelines in my state put in place by our Democrat governor go into effect.

I guess the masks work better at a Biden celebration then they do at a local business, at school, or even in a gathering of friends outside in a park.

I wonder if Biden will get blamed for a bad economy when he implements nationwide lockdown restrictions?

The press has been very clear about the death rates fall.  Perfectly clear.  And one of the CRNA's in my old group found out after an unplanned intubation that pt. was Covis positive and cannot get a Covid test within the hospital.  So, no, I don't  believe anyone can get a Covid test anytime.  Did  Biden  say he was going to lock down the entire country?  Do you have a source ?  And, BTW, drive up testing was suspended for a few days because both of the National Guardsmen tested positive.

@Beermanyep, Biden will be soundly criticised for the state of the economy and the deficit and that criticism will come most loudly and consistently from the republicans who authored the economy and deficit.  That's how it's long worked.  They are economic hypocrites but their voting base can't see it. Why do you suppose?

With all the news out there this is the huge headline over at Fox like this is the most important story there is.

As pathetic as that might be, it definitely is newsworthy and I do have to hold the Speaker to the same standards and wonder "what were they thinking"?

Since they didn't actually have a sit down dinner this outrage at what someone says was planned is amusing.  How many mask optional rallies and parties did Trump actually have during the pandemic?
