President Biden thread

Published

Wow.  No one has started such a thread yet?

After promising that most K-8 students would be in schools in the first 100 days,  apparently Joe is afraid to lead on this and has drastically scaled back that goal.

Instead, we're shooting for about half to go to school at least one day a week,  by the end of April.

Probably true if you're a "far left demagogue" as why would a far left demagogue consume right wing media?

I remember though during the advent of "fake news media", a poster here named all the fake news media:  NBC, MSNBC, CNN, NPR, ABC, NY Times, Washington Post, Huffington Post, CBS, on and on.  All were fake news media except for Fox News.

Depends on which way the wind blows whether Fox News is even fake news to Trump and followers or not.

Crazy times.

Unfortunately I think most people do not trust any media. Not like they use to anyway.

Authoritarians and fascists promote that distrust.  They call media "fake" and "enemy of the people". That doesn't bother millions of Trump supporters, they find ways to justify and defend the agenda.  They also undermine the public's confidence in the judicial or law enforcement agencies. It's fascinating, really.  You should read about it.

That's the intellectually lazy person's response...Knowing nothing about anything is the opposite of perusing the news skeptically.  I'm not as happy about AI but that doesn't mean I'm not in training to use it wisely.

I wasn't trying to debate it. The American people are  trusting media less and less. Doesn't mean they are not trying to navigate through it.

Why is that "lazy"?

I agree.  This is backed up by research in that people trust the media a record low levels.  Also, apparently many people feel the media is deliberately misleading them.

It's not lazy it's just truth about how people feel.

I personally trust most media and stay away from extremes.  I'm bothered that people are so mistrusting that they would believe a conspiracy theory or down right lies.

I'm bothered that people don't take a deeper dive to look for the truth.

I especially dislike social media influencers.  They are so easily debunked but millions of people follow them on TikTok spewing nonsense like "kale is bad for you", "Trump won the election"........

I think that is intellectually lazy to simply distrust "the media". That really opens the door to believe any unbelievable thing because you presumably can't believe any of them.  Everything is equally plausible in that delusion.

People feel like the media is misleading them because some of it is.  Some of it was exposed in a big court case but people still take that outlet seriously.  That's because none of that matters in the era of Trump.  It's easiest to just say that all of the media lies and is untrustworthy and then believe what you want.

Yes of course. The media you trust is the only true reliable non bias media.. .......

I agree but saying "more people distrust the media now" is not as Subee said an intellectual lazy response, it is in fact a true statement.

Not sure what you're saying.  Are you saying you don't like kale or that it's unhealthy.

Perhaps she didn't get her actual meaning across, I don't know and can't speak for her.  Intellectual laziness is pretty widespread.  People are busy.  It's easier to just believe the thing you hear so often.  To just assimilate that thinking.

I know.  The "Russia collusion" story comes to mind.

It was a joke, meant to lighten the mood. I think kale has the texture of cellophane and it ties my guts in knots. I'm not sure how that can be good for anything.

It terms of trusting the media, there used to be something called the fairness doctrine, a policy that directed news organizations to present differing viewpoints of issues. That doctrine was abolished in 1987. .  I think since then, media has become more biased. Some say that this how Rush Limbaugh became a national figure. He spouted conspiracy theories and name-called those he disagreed with

When I grew up, Walter Conkrite was someone you trusted to give you facts. It didn't matter what network he worked for. Now, newscasters are celebrities and it feels like they compete to report the most outlandish stories possible. Or they are shills for their chosen candidates.
