Wow. No one has started such a thread yet?
After promising that most K-8 students would be in schools in the first 100 days, apparently Joe is afraid to lead on this and has drastically scaled back that goal.
Instead, we're shooting for about half to go to school at least one day a week, by the end of April.
I didn't listen to the Biden speech as I worked and was pretty tired. Sounds like a speech that you either liked or hated depending on how you feel about Trump.
Trump without announcing a that he's running for Presidency has more than once hinted what it would be like if he won 2024 (he even says that he should be declared the winner in the here and now or have a re-election immediately). He's saying if he's president he would pardon people and issue apologies to those convicted for activities on January 6th.
I have resisted the rhetoric that "democracy is in danger" because off my faith in the United States system that has worked for a few hundred years. However, this is not Democracy that he's promoting. The sad thing is there is a large amount of people that believe in him and not democracy. I am concerned...oh well, broken record.
My best friend who watched the speech had this to say:
QuoteI was impressed with the forcefulness of Biden's speech last night. As more than one commentator has said, "If you don't recognize the danger and call out the danger, that's a danger in itself" or more eloquent words to that effect. Biden did not hesitate to identify MAGA Republicans as anti-democratic and spelled out why (refuse to accept election results when they lose, harbor conspiracy theories, participate in political violence, chief among them). I have found him historically wishy-washy (even the use of semi in his latest "semi-fascist" assessment he talked about previously seems wishy washy to me), so I found his clear-spokenness last night refreshing. Kevin McCarthy's response to it is enough to make me want to puke. What a total slimeball.
To find out what McCarthy said I went to Fox. Typically they are criticizing inflation and immigration, no problem, it's fair. But his statements seem like an alternate reality. Like both him and the President are saying the same thing about each other.
Quote"In the past, two years, Joe Biden has launched an assault on the soul of America, on its people, on laws, on its most sacred values, He has launched an assault on our democracy. His policies have severely wounded America's soul. diminished America's spirit, and betrayed America's trust,"

Mccarthy has been unhinged for years. Why should we except anything coherent from him? I don't think it's logical to put inflation at Biden's feet. It was a WORLD wide pandemic. Can you show me which countries have escaped it? What would you do besides the gentle rise in interest rates and the measures in the IRA? IMHO, he's balancing on a tightwire responsibly in a deteriorating country.

I would suggest that McCarthy is projecting. He's not honest.

You don't have to like Trump to hate it, necessarily. It was purely a political speech. Call it what it was.
Deflection and projection is uttered here often. That speech was the Chief Executive edition.
Not a huge McCarthy fan. But he hit it on the head with this quote:
"Democrats have had total control in Washington," McCarthy also said. "They control the House, they control the Senate. They control the White House. They have all the levers of power. So let me ask you this. How have they done?"
A couple of CNN hosts dared criticizing the staging of Marines in the background for a political speech. Some folks are calling for those hosts to be fired. They want their media to feed them only what they want to hear, I guess.

Do you remember when Trump staged the military on the border before the midterm elections...as he was promising a working class tax cut and health care reform? No?
How have they done? They've done fine. They've passed meaningful legislation and they’ve managed not to bully the Ukrainian president for personal political favors or unilaterally break any global agreements. So far Biden hasn't altered any weather maps or hired any people known to be on the payroll of a foreign government.

It's definitely a political speech timing with the upcoming mid-terms. That's obvious.
I'll let Biden tell you what he's done because really it's a silly question.

One certainly can disagree that he's accomplished anything worthwhile if you're on the right, and certainly like any presidency there are problems like inflation and the economy. His presidency has been a crap show for sure.
But I still have to ask, if your view is that "In the past, two years, Joe Biden has launched an assault on the soul of America, on its people, on laws, on its most sacred values, He has launched an assault on our democracy. His policies have severely wounded America's soul. diminished America's spirit, and betrayed America's trust" in what reality could this possibly be true?

Biden surrounding himself with Marines and the American flag to make a political speech was disgusting. But what else do you expect from a guy that was diddling his daughters in the shower.
What’s your point?

10% for the big guy. He’s a Chinese stooge just like his crackhead son.

I don't necessarily mind them whining either. It's a democracy. But the argument "you take out a loan, you pay it back" from a person that took out a loan and had it forgiven sounds lame or the "it's not fair because I just spent ten years paying my loan back through hard work and sacrifice", "we're paying for useless degrees and lesbian dance classes" sounds selfish and weak.
Some the concerns, that not everyone, particularly Gen X people like you at the top of their game, needs it, it's too expensive, it doesn't address the route cause of the high cost of education, irresponsible lending and irresponsible borrowing, and for many people $10,000 might cover a 10th of their loan they are are still saddlesd with debt and in particular the interest for many decades.
Democrat lawmakers aren't likely to oppose it because their base has been marching in protest demanding it, and are even claiming it doesn't go far enough. It's not "buying votes", that's right wing rhetoric, it was part of his campaign and while he doesn't go far enough it's a campaign promise.
In an ideal world all loans would be forgiven, including crippling loans for doctors and people with advanced degrees making decent money, and education would be free. All that money would be put back into the economy. How many times I have heard "I'd buy a new car but can't because of student loans". Here in Florida rents are going up dramatically and extra money could help people to survive. It'd be money well spent and we'd have a better educated society. But we don't have those trillions of dollars. We're spending it on health care, the military and tax cuts.
Many of us on the left recognize the problems with this package and aren't okay with it.
