President Biden thread

Published

Wow.  No one has started such a thread yet?

After promising that most K-8 students would be in schools in the first 100 days,  apparently Joe is afraid to lead on this and has drastically scaled back that goal.

Instead, we're shooting for about half to go to school at least one day a week,  by the end of April.

Wait a sec, hold on a minute there, boyyy!

Since when did Florida move to the border?

And didn't DeSantis put a hold on those cruise lines ?????

The border is a mess.  Now there's this.

The Biden administration on Saturday was working on plans to send many of the thousands of Haitian immigrants who have gathered in a Texas border city back to their homeland, a swift response to the huge influx of people who suddenly crossed from Mexico and congregated under and around a bridge.

I had a conversation with a woman that truly believed that the covid surge in the US was caused by illegal immigrants "just being allowed to walk in and spread covid".  I kept the conversation brief deliberately because I choose my battles and it wasn't someone I knew, just a random conversation.

I wonder what she say about the mandate that takes effect October 1st that all would-be immigrants be vaccinated.

About Florida, we are finally seeing a drop in hospitalizations where I work and this is true around the state.  Deaths reached a grim 50,000 this past weak and percent of positivity is still double digits, but 70% of Floridians now have at least one vaccine, but vaccination rates are dropping.    I take whatever little bit of good news I can.

Also, on the good news front I traveled out to the Southwest and the planes were full, the tourist destinations were bustling and some of the state parks reporting record numbers this past Summer.  I'm glad to see that sector of the economy doing well.  Same here in Florida where apparently we are near pre-covid levels of tourists.

Sorry this post was all over the place.

It's not the only reason, but it is s part of it.

From the article I linked to earlier:

"Local Democratic officials are beginning to push back against the White House. The city of Laredo, Texas, filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration on July 16, alleging that DHS's practice of releasing migrants into the town spread COVID-19 and contributed to overcrowding in hospitals."

Fair enough I guess to speculate that what is happening in that town is migrant related, even though overcrowding in hospitals there is mirroring what is happening all around the country far away from the border.

Florida governor DeSantis said "I can tell you, whatever variants are around the world, they're coming across that southern border" in a press conference last month.  That's just scapegoating and not related to real honest hard evidence or truth.  The Delta variant was first discovered in India and immigrants at the southern border are no more likely to be positive than other travelers.  We can blame the border all we want but we're the one's not wearing masks, crowding in planes, restaurants, churches and concert halls when not being vaccinated.

But I understand and am not saying monitoring covid and trying to control covid at the border isn't an issue.  Border towns are struggling with the influx of people and that causes many issues.  Funny that people are all about mitigation and mandates at the border, but for the rest of us not so much.

Nobody is saying that illegal immigrants are somehow more covid positive than anyone else. However, when someone asks basic questions about putting something in their bodies they are attacked verbally and sometimes physically because they might infected others.

Well the point is we don't know how many illegal immigrants are covid positive, we do not know their vaccine status and we do know they are not socially distancing or using masks. But that doesn't get talked about.

All migrants entering the US are tested for Covid.

No, no where close to all of them.

"The city of Laredo this week began busing migrant families to Austin, Dallas and Houston ― bypassing the nonprofits that were providing testing, quarantine, vaccines and humanitarian aid ― amid a resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic."

And, obviously the ones crossing illegally are not being tested.

How did your ancestors get here Beerman? I'm pretty sure they aren't American Indians?

We are all products of immigrants in some shape or form.

I would like legal immigration, but I hardly think that people fleeing their own countries and walking hundreds if not thousands of miles, are interested in not  wanting anything but a better life and being good citizens.

You do not seem to understand that people from privilege backgrounds rarely appreciate or utilize optimally their chances, whereas, immigrants are like empty vessels, which if you fill with the right education and ambition, will produce in innumerable ways to our benefit as a nation.

Why do you people, fear someone who will take likely more than a generation to compete with you, so in no way present a problem for you? Could it be racism?

American cars were utter ***, until the Japanese made them up their game re performance, safety, reliability and economy! Do you understand genetics? The influx of new genes and how the best genes are incorporated?

Historically, social conservatives have blamed disease on immigrants all across the globe.  If social conservatives were interested in slowing the spread of covid they would be wildly advocating for widespread vaccination and would encourage masking in public settings, but they're not.   They are interested in pointing fingers and trying to make Biden look bad politically.

Beerman would be better served if he complained to his stupid and cruel governor.   Has he not dominion over Laredo?

The final statement  in the article makes it sound like they will be tested after they arrive to their new location.  Obviously this isn't ideal and upsets some people.  "They will not have been tested and they have some really basic needs," he said, for example, "after being tested, being able to sleep.......".

Does this mean they will be tested or won't?

But yes illegals bypassing everyone aren't tested.

Since this is the Biden thread from your article there's this which further complicates matters.

Although the Biden administration has continued to quickly expel most migrants to Mexico under the Title 42 public health law, Mexico stopped accepting expelled families in Tamaulipas state — which increased the pressure on Border Patrol in South Texas.

I'm not sure what the humanitarian answer is.   I think people are doing the best they can with an unmanageable situation and mistakes will be made

Part of the border is closed and there's a mass expulsion of Haitians.

Ultimately there still doesn't seem to be a good case that the border is responsible for covid surges across the country or even Texas.  There certainly isn't a case that the Biden administration is just letting people walk in and get free stuff and spread covid around.  But it definitely is a concern, as it should be.

This really has nothing to do with immigration.  I'm old enough to remember the OPEC oil embargo when oil rich companies realized their power, and President Carter grimly telling us "we are running out of oil", the long gas lines, and gas prices .  American cars were gas guzzlers, and the Japanese cars, particularly the small Toyotas were gas efficient and that fueled their rise (and much anger in America btw) and popularity here in America for those than anything genetic or immigration related.  But you're right about the quality of the Japanese cars, it's top notch.

His entire post really had nothing to do with immigration in the context of how I brought it up.

I'm surprised you and others bothered with it.
