What fields interest you?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

hi everyone!

i was talking with a few other pre-nursing students the other day at a student meeting and we were talking about the fields that interest us or where we see ourselves at in nursing. one of the instructors overheard us and told us to write down what are we thought we would be working in after graduation now and see how it compares at the end... she said most students change their mind after clinicals really start.

so... here is what i have picked as a pre-nursing student. i really (i mean really!) would love to be an or nurse. i was sad to see that our clinicals kinda rush by the field and do not do more... i doubt they even give an actual idea of what an or nurse is or does because it is so quick. the other area i could potentially see myself in is the er... i am love the "on your toes" type settings where you never know what you will be faced with at any time... so the er could be a place i would fit in... i also know an area that i will not be working in... peds. i have a very hard time seeing sick children and tend to let it get to me. i think i could develop a thick skin for a child or two no and then... but i don't think i could work with them on an every day basis without becoming extremely depressed. i dread doing my peds clnicals for that very reason... but, heck, maybe after doing them my feelings will change.

any other takers??

cheers :biere:

I'm leaning towards geriatrics (LTC), O.B. (labor & delivery), occupational health, home health, public health or school nurse. :nurse:

HI Glimmer

I am a pre-nursing student and I too want to be a OR nurse or ER. Ped seem like something I would like to try but like you I don't think I could stand all the kids who is dying. I'm a big cry baby for kids and I have a 2 a half boy and my hurts stops everytime he come home from preschool with a bump or brusie.(smile) I would reallly enjoy the intense pace in the OR or ER. But who knows when ever I start my clinicals I might change my mind.

I'd love OR, med-surg, OB, or a school nurse....gotta love summers off! :roll

Who knows, I may go on and become a NP and gain the respect that dr's have, but nurses deserve.

Awwww... but in the OR you can also go on to become a RNFA which is the first assistant to the surgeon... I have toyed with the idea of becoming an NP down the road... but I am only pre-nursing so things can change :specs:

Good post!!!

I am definately interested in ER nursing with my background in EMS and current work in the ER. Next on my list would be Labor and Delivery and then I have a smidge of me that is interested in psych nursing!

For me, psych nursing, geropsych nursing, pallitive care nursing, nursing informatics.

After a few years from now, I am sure this will be totally different.

Geriatrics and hospice.

I'm not real sure yet- I figure as soon as I start clinicals I will get a feel for what I REALLY want to do. I know what I don't want to do is geriatrics and what I would love to do is L+D or NICU but then again that's *now*....I will probably up and change my mind!

Evantually I'd like to teach- perhaps fertility awareness courses. Originally I wanted to be a Sex Therapist but age caught up with me...as did divorce...and well....gotta pay the bills:)

I would love to get into L&D or O.R......cant wait and good luck! :)

I am definitely interested in Peds, because I love kids. Who knows though, it might bother me seeing them sick. I also think I would enjoy psychiatric ward or neonatal. :) I just found out I am accepted, but I'm starting to get nervous--I've never worked in a hospital or had any experience whatsoever. Do you guys have experience?
