What fields interest you?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

hi everyone!

i was talking with a few other pre-nursing students the other day at a student meeting and we were talking about the fields that interest us or where we see ourselves at in nursing. one of the instructors overheard us and told us to write down what are we thought we would be working in after graduation now and see how it compares at the end... she said most students change their mind after clinicals really start.

so... here is what i have picked as a pre-nursing student. i really (i mean really!) would love to be an or nurse. i was sad to see that our clinicals kinda rush by the field and do not do more... i doubt they even give an actual idea of what an or nurse is or does because it is so quick. the other area i could potentially see myself in is the er... i am love the "on your toes" type settings where you never know what you will be faced with at any time... so the er could be a place i would fit in... i also know an area that i will not be working in... peds. i have a very hard time seeing sick children and tend to let it get to me. i think i could develop a thick skin for a child or two no and then... but i don't think i could work with them on an every day basis without becoming extremely depressed. i dread doing my peds clnicals for that very reason... but, heck, maybe after doing them my feelings will change.

any other takers??

cheers :biere:

Specializes in Med/Surg, Dialysis.

Areas of interest for me include Med/Surg, ICU, Cardiac Care.

I don't think I would like Peds because I would feel like kids were scared of me when I come to give an injection or an assessment, and I don't really like seeing kids sick.

I don't really think I would like OB or L and D because I don't really like women's problems, even though I am a woman! :chuckle

But it all may change after clinicals start, hopefully FALL 2005!!!

Good luck everyone!

Specializes in LTAC, Telemetry, Thoracic Surgery, ED.

Hmmm, right now I'm thinking OR, Peds, L&D, ICU, Oncology, Burn, Rad.....staying away from LTC, psych

At least that's what I say now, who knows when it's all said and done

Boy my heart is really pulling me towards Oncology Nursing. I feel like God is sending me to give the hope I've found to those who have little hope. I have had a lot of people cross my path that have been affected by this hidiuos disease, and I may not be able to cure it, but like I said maybe I can share some hope with someone who desperately needs it.

I've also considered ER, or Trauma, I kind of like the fast pace, always on your toes kind of thing. But I really feel Oncology is probably the way I will go. If anyone knows anything about Oncology Nursing, let me hear from you.

ever consider nephrology nursing. check out this website http://www.annanurse.org

at the bottom of the first page you will see a section that leads to a well prepared brochure on the speciality. you might want to print it out and show your instructor and fellow students.

like you say.. ya never know...........................

Critical care burns in a burn center.

I am a former burn patient and the only nurses who took care of me were former patients.

Specializes in Med-Surg.

I have felt drawn to hospice for a looooooong time. This may sound bold, but there are too many people getting ready to meet their maker who don't know Him. Not that I'm planning on going into it with an agenda, but if I'm needed on a spiritual level I'll be there and ready. I'll be happy wherever I end up...the medical profession rocks!

Blessings are like hugs from God...counting your blessings is like hugging God back!

My top two choices are L&D and NICU. I thought about psych since I have a B.S. in psychology. I quickly let go of that idea when I heard how violent psych patients can get. Another though was peds but I, like one of the other posters, feel like the children will be scared of me and I don't want to have to deal with that on a day to day basis.

I would love to work in plastic surgery!

My top choices right now are NICU and L&D. I'm also semi-interested in OR. We'll see how I feel after clinicals.

Labor/Delivery, Cardiology, NICU or PICU. I originally decided to go back to school for nursing because of my interest in labor/delivery. However, it seems like SO many people are also interested in the same thing. So, I'm starting to lean more toward cardiology lately. Cardiac surgery just fascinates me! :)

geriatics/psych/er but i don't want anything to do with ob!!

Leaning VERY strongly towards NICU...always on their BB...perhaps plastic surgery tho'...seems like it would be fun!

Specializes in Global Health Informatics, MNCH.

I'm starting an accelerated BSN/MS program in the summer. Right now I'm signed up for FNP with Informatics as a sub-specialty. I'm actually really considering doing the DNsc though, I'm really interested in health policy, especially in underserved populations. I like midwifery but the job market in my area is not that great, I wouldn't do peds because of the parents (surprised no one else has mentioned that), and I wouldn't do NICU because there's too many moral gray areas and I think it'd be too emotional for me, also the parent issue is there again. My undergrad degree is in neuroscience (and CS) so I've been thinking I should look into that as a specialty. There's just so many options!!!
