Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Intro to Chem. or High School Chem. is a co req. at the college I am attending. I had High School Chem. passed with a C, but that was 20 years ago. Should I just sign up for the Intro to Chem class or is the High School chem good enough:confused:? What do you suggest?

TIA

retake it. it will help u for micro and physiology.

I took Intro to Chem and didn't find it useful for anything but fulfilling a pre-req requirement.

I had high school chemistry but had to take an intro to chemistry course as a prerequisite and I'd say skip it. I ended up taking the chemistry course AFTER I had already finished all other prerequisites (AP, Micro, etc) and although it is interesting I didn't need it to understand the chemistry that came up in AP and Micro.

If the school requirement states, "high school chem" or "Intro to chem", then I would skip it because your high school chem is good enough. Do not retake classes unless required or unless you want the refresher. Any class, such as physio or micro, that requires a chem background will provide a very brief review of the necessary chem at the beginning of the class.

I didn't take in high school or college and got A's in Micro and A&P I, if your just going for your A.S. I would skip it since the first chapters in both those classes give you a basic rundown of what you need to know. If your going for your bachelors or above I would take the college chemistry course, it will help you down the road with your more intensive classes especially pharmacology. Hope that helps:D

Check that the chem doesn't have to be within the past five years. That is a common requirment for science classes, you might not have a choice.

Actually, if I were you, I'd retake it anyway... if you got a C in a high school level class, you probably don't have enough chemistry to really understand the physiology and microbiology.

If you intend to go for a BSN, then two or more semesters of college level chem will be required. However, do not take them now unless you are certain that you will be applying to a BSN program prior to the chem classes becoming five years old. Most schools nowadays require that science courses be no older than five years old when you apply. Timing is everything.

This is how my school was as well. You either had to have taken chem in high school or college. I actually took it in high school and then in college as well. My school, as many others, is very competive. I asked what they would do if I completed chem in high school and college. They said that they would take the higher grade.

In your case, I would suggest that you take it again, just to give you that little extra advantage (being that you do score better than a C). It would not hurt anything...

It depends on your school and if you apply for a second Bachelor program or if it is your first Bachelor. If it is your second, you might not need any Chemistry classes (2 out of the 3 second BSN programs I applied to did not require any CHE as a prerequisite and did not require that you had it within your previous Bachelor program) but you already know the requirements for your school anyways.
