Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am getting ready to start nursing school. I am considering going to Keiser University because it takes so so long to get into nursing school where I live. I can get in to Keiser faster meaning faster graduation. I have heard mixed things about this school. Could you tell me what you know about it or have heard?

Sorry if I offended anyone. I dont mean to pass judgement on the graduates of the program, it just makes me mad that they charge so much for tuition and dont even prepare their students for the NCLEX properly. I just checked the pass rates and they are currently very low...ranging from 33% to the mid 70s. If Im paying that much for a nursing education, they had better have pass rates in the high 90s so I KNOW Im going to pass. Melbourne does have the highest rates, which makes sense bc they are the only campus that is NLN accredited.

At the hospital where I work, keiser students from the tampa campus have a bad reputation bc of some of the occurances on the floor when they have been here. You are right that the school as a whole shouldnt be judged like that, but if I were going to go to school and I was going to pay that much money, I would want the program to be highly thought of in the community.

Im sure its the same as Excelsior graduates, there are good ones and bad ones...but anytime there is a bad one, Im sure the first thing ppl would say was "well, they went to Excelsior, so...."

The OP was asking for opinions, and I gave mine...thats all.

BTW I just figured out the Original post was from way back...

I agree with you- If I am paying a lot of money for an associate's degree-- that school better be accredited, and have at least a 90% or better for the nclex-rn scores.-- but that's just me.

I decided to take the long-haul and go to a cheap community college that I waited 1year8months to get into---- but that's a long story---

And the NCLEX scores comparing all the campuses are not in the 90's they range from 50-70 depending how many people took the nclex that month.

but anyways-- met a nurse from keiser at an FIU information session-- and FIU accepts keiser students! so there you go $40K for an associate's degree and only $6-8K for a bachelor's degree:eek:

keiser does not really cost 30 k!

if you have your pre reqs it will cost you 18k plus books and such!!!

I really like my school, because you are treated really nice, and even the directors of other courses such as MA or RT talk to you and help you out when they see you outside cracking your head on the book!

i just like it so much so far!

it is definately worth it

for those in the orlando area, students and working rns, how is keiser's "repuation" in the orlando area? there are only 4 programs that prepare you for your rn (vcc, scc, keiser, ucf). i think it really depends on the individual. but that comment about the school being on one hospital's do not hire list down south makes me nervous!

RN is an RN...if you can sit for the state board you can be an RN it doesnt matter what college. Accredited or not...there are a lot of programs here. VCC , SCC, Flhosp, UCF, Keiser, LSCC, Brevard, Remington, Herzing, Daytona, Boward. I think all the hospitals love VCC and SCC students because of the long relationship the have and clinical rotations. If you dont have a clinic rotation with the hospital you will be working at, you my have a hard time.

If the school have a bad reputation...it because of the students...so during the interview and clinicals you must change their minds.

There are only 2 Nursing accreditting bodies know of: NLNAC (ADN and below) and CCNE (BSN and above) VCC SCC UCF flHosp Broward are the only ones accredited. Keiser has applied the Orlando class haven't graduated yet...hopefully the inauggural class will do as well as the Melbourne class with a high NCLEX pass rate.

i totally agree with ashleygil! a nurse is a nurse! most hospitals only care about your licenses. they don't care what school you went to, the nclex is challenging so if you can pass it then obiviously you know what you are doing. i am currently in the process of enrolling into keiser's nursing program ( i take my net test tuesday) i think that keiser is a nice school from what i have seen. they require their students to be professional and i like that. now as far as the cost yeah it is a lil pricey but i get a discount because of my employment. but i look at it like this.......... i could go take 12 or 13 pre-reqs take the nat test apply to the rn program along with 200+ other people and pray that i had enough points. or i could take the net test if i pass it and the interview then i am in the rn program and i proceed to take my pre-reqs. i don't want to spend 2 years taking pre-reqs and another 1 or 2 years waiting then another 16 months in the program. i would rather pay the extra to start doing what i love.... helping people. i don't want to be the hospital phone operator all my life watching all the rn's pass by my window! i would go crazy!:banghead:

There is no reason to pay that much to attend school. I go the local CC (Brevard) as does my wife, together it would have cost about $12,000 (turned out to be free with scholarships though). Keiser has a mixed reputation at the hospitals I frequent with the typical response being to go to BCC for 2 year or UCF for 4. Most agree Keiser costs far too much. As for the NCLEX pass rates, study and it won't be an issue. I took the Kaplan free test today and I have no fears about how I will fare with the real thing.

Ok...I know this thread started a long time ago but I still feel the need to respond...First I am glad I did'nt notice this thread while I was making the decision to about which school to attend. I too was most interested in getting started and getting finished as soon as possible once I made my decision to go back to school. I moved to Florida for family reasons and live in town where there are 2 other major universities as well as a community college and a technical college all with nursing programs. I contacted Keiser for information and was a little put off by the recruitment process that followed and the fact that the campus appeared to be in what looked like a strip mall from back home and to top it off the nursing program was new to this particular campus but I stuck to my original reasoning...get it done now! I am now an R.N. and don't regret my choice to go to Keiser one bit! Of course there were times throughout the program where I questioned my choice but what nursing student doesn't..if becoming a nurse was easy more people would be doing it. Our class started with 22 students and finished with less than 1/2 of that...and all but one of us passed the NCLEX the first time and in 75 questions too (not that the # of questions matters...passing is passing). And although the loss of so many classmates along the way was sometimes controversial it showed me that Keiser was serious about their standards, goals, and drive for success of their students. As for the reputation of the students...I think that each facility has so many people and so many personalities that you will always find someone that thinks one school is better or worse than the others...I have been told many a time from staff that they actually prefer Keiser students because they are more mature, knowledgable and proactive than the other schools (as I am sure the other schools have heard similar things). It is most certainly more expensive than the other options but they are accredited and I am now an R.N. So as another poster replied it does'nt matter where your degree is from...only that you have it....you have to weigh your priorities and make your decision from there....good luck to anyone who is thinking about nursing school...it's not an easy choice or an easy path but it sure does feel great when you finish!

Hello. I am about to take the NET at Keiser. Can you give me any advice? Thanks!

Hi, How did you do on the placement test? The one with just math?

The campus in Lakeland did not require that test.

oh. Well Just freshen up on your math. Google NETtest and look at some of the studyguides. KNOW your FRACTIONS AND PERCENTAGES! Good luck. Please keep us informed!
