How are you paying for Nursing school?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

For my pre reqs I have been attending a community college and either used government loans and/or paid out of pocket, and my husbands work reimbursed us a total of $3000 for tuition. Now I am getting ready to transfer to a different school that costs $18000/year but since I have taken quite a few of classes I will probably pay about $13000. I am eligible for about $9000 in government loans so where else should I get school loans? I'm nervous because I've only ever used the loans that don't accrue interest and then are very low interest until paid off.

Yep, scholarships for me and working really hard to save money for whatever that doesn't cover. It definitely sucks that a lot of scholarships are based on need, but maybe your school has some that are not? I would definitely investigate that. There are also websites like Freeweb and such, but those are pretty competitive. =/ Is nursing a workforce shortage thing where you are, or do certain hospitals offer you money on the condition that you work for them after school? That might be something to look into as well. Good luck!

Look specifically for non-needs based scholarships. I was in the same boat because of my wife's income. I got a scholarship which paid for my final year of schooling.

My state has a scholarship call the Dean's List scholarship or something to that effect. If you made a 25 or above on you ACT they will pay 2500 per semester, so I plan on re-taking the ACT after some tutoring.

Wish I could qualify for federal aid :( I was laid off from my job last May, however, the FASFA only looks at last year's tax return. I had to cash in my 401K & pension just to have money to live on and pay for school. It looks like I earned twice my normal salary, which is completely misleading. So, I won't qualify for anything until the following year. I'm using my life savings to pay for nursing school. Hopefully, I'll get accepted...letters go out in 2 weeks!

federal sub/unsub loans and a private loan. i don't work and can't get pell grant anymore.

my school doesn't accept loans :/

My tuition for the nursing program is getting covered through a scholarship (half) and my parents (half).

I really recommend looking at local hospitals for scholarships. These usually require you to commit at year (or two) of working at the said hospital once you pass the NCLEX. They still pay you once you work but they also cover some of your schooling costs now. I know 3 hospitals by me offer this kind of compensation.

Scholarships and out-of-pocket for me. Try doing some searches for scholarships online. There are a couple of good scholarship search engines if you are willing to wade through all of that. Also check scholarships from your school and from your community. Those are often easier to apply for and (sometimes) to end up receiving.

my school doesn't accept loans :/

That's odd. What school do you attend?

It's a community college and accredited. I guess they had a really high default and/or drop out rate so they decided not to accept loans anymore. They do take the pell grant, though.

The idea of student loans terrify me. I got enough grants and scholarships to cover my costs and then some, so I'll get a little bit of money to help with living expenses. I don't want to work full time while going to school and raising my daughter but I also don't want to be stressing about bills when I need to be studying!

I hope to be able to avoid student loans once I bridge to RN as well.
