A&P 1 Spring 08

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi y'all! Anybody taking A&P 1 this coming spring semester? I'm trying to get as many pre-req's out of the way as possible and could use a study buddy or 2! Thanks! :)

Well, 2nd class today (we have one 4 hour lecture in the week and a 2 hour lab). It went pretty well although my out-of-practice brain is freaking out over all of this information already. We did tissues today

Your second class and you're doing tissues already??? :uhoh3: Is this class in hyperspeed or something? Wow! Is it a one-semester or two-semester sequence?

Well it's one semester for A&PI and then we have another for A&PII but the semester is only 11 weeks long. Tissues are going really well though! haha. I've got a LOT of flash cards done and it's actually a lot easier to memorize than I thought it was going to be- thank goodness! I think the trick is studying every day so you don't forget what you've learned the day before

I can't help but think-studying for this final will be insane!

Hi everyone, I'm new to the site and noticed this thread on A&P I. I am currently taking this class and I'm finding it to be a bit difficult. My instructor really doesn't know much of what he is talking about. He constantly has to refer back to the book for just about every detail. He's also not keeping in sync with my lab instructor, which I thought was supposed to be happening, IDK! I have my first test 1/24 and I'm extremely nervous, as he hasn't gone over everything yet. I only have one more class before this test. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you in advance.

Do they have a list of vocabulary that you have to know? because that would be very important to study. Other than that I guess all you can do is read the text and try to figure out what main concepts will be on the test- or maybe get together with another couple of students in the class and study together. You might need to help each other if the teacher is not helpful. It's too bad- this course has a lot of information and needs a good instructor!

We did tissues in our SECOND lab...it was like 15 slides! Evidently my class is warp speed too. It's hard because the lab and the lecture are like 2 different classes so I'm constantly studying for different things. The lecture is not so bad, I actually really enjoy it, but the lab makes me very, very nervous...mainly because we only have 2 tests and they account for 85% of our grade. Also, the tests are "lab practicals" which means that we have a million stations set up and have to go from microscope to microscope, dead cat to dead cat, and so on and name what is shown in each slide/specimin.

Has anyone figured out a good way to study the different cell types (squamos, cuboidal, etc) and what tissue types they go with? Is flashcards the way to go? I'm struggling with it a little. Thanks!

I had my first AP lab Thursday and we will have our first quiz...Thursday...in our 2nd class. (lecture meets 2x a week and lab once a week) We had about 40ish body parts to memorize as well as probably 20 other definitions and such. So far I have about 95% of it down though.

The scarey thing is that as we went around the room to introduce ourselves about 80% of my class is RETAKING it because they failed it last semester.

That seemed awfully high to me!

the different cell types (squamos, cuboidal, etc)

Hey! I'm just doing this and luckily not finding it too hard- but my trick is not memorizing the individual tissues but learning the words

simple- one layer of cell

stratified- multiple layers of cells

squamous- flat (like a SQUAre) cuboidal- CUBE-like columnar- column-like

Almost all of these you can tell what they look like by what the word sounds like.

Once you know the words all you have to remember is what the individual cells do, and that is easier once you know the shape (ex. simple squamous epithelium (one layered, flat tissue) is very thin, so it functions in the exchange of materials ex. it lines blood vessels

Also, flash cards have been a huge help for me for all the vocab and learning the junctions

Good luck!

Awesome, thanks so much! I figured that would be the way to go but I was psyching myself out thinking about how much info it is.

I will be taking A&P this spring quarter it starts 04/08; I am a bit nevous for I am changing my major after 1 and a half years from IFSM to Nursing. I will be going for my LPN first so that I can support my family and then getting my RN immed after. Good luck this semester, I will be counting on you all for support!!

Okay, I don't know about everyone else, but this A&P1 class is turning out to be MUCH more than I bargained for, and this is only the 1rst week!! I am just now realizing that I am going to have to get my gluteus maximus in gear because I have already put myself behind the 8 ball by waiting so late to really study. I am currently taking a hybrid class where the class is online and the lab is 1 night a week. I do pretty well once I get started, it's just the getting started part.

Happy MLK day, everybody!!!! I have been reading posts on this website for almost a year, and I have really come to realize just how blessed I am. For instance, eventhough our nursing school (and most other medical programs here) have a waiting list, at least I don't have to take any of these tests that I hear other hopefuls talking about before I could even apply. And the hospitals here have so many programs for student nurse tech and the like. I have already attended a Nursing Student Association meeting at my school, and we have had hospital nurse recruiters come to the meeting (bringing free breakfasts!!) and trying to convince students to come to their hospitals as techs, for internships, and externships. Eventhough nothing is written in stone, I am very grateful for these opportunities.

I'm about to start the second week of class, and I've been studying like crazy and I already feel like I'm behind! I've got the anatomy terms from ch 1 down pat, but I still feel behind :(

Im a little nervous, my first lecture and lab is tomorrow after work. IM SAYING A PRAYER TONIGHT.
