I saw a post asking why no one responded to the OP's other posts and it got me thinking. I should point out that this has NOTHING to do with her(?) posts other than it started the gears turning, but when I see a post written in txt, I shut it down and move on. If I see a post with a paragraph-and-a-half and no punctuation in it, I move on. If English is your second language, of course people will make allowances. But if you were raised with it, I make none.
I know it's expedient to use shortcuts. I know we're used to it because of the texting we do. That does not make it okay here. I got wall post on Facebook from an old boyfriend and I couldn't even read it because he refuses to spell things correctly. (Really, that's the only reason. )
If you want help, if you want to be taken seriously, IF YOU WANT GOOD GRADES, start using standard English. Please. Use proper grammar. Use punctuation, even if you're not sure if you're using the right ones. TRY. You can txt all you want in your off-time, but here, and at school or work, you need to communicate in a way that other people understand without having to translate. You will have to write papers in class. You will do a LOT of writing. If it's unintelligible, your grade will reflect that. It's in your own best interest, honestly.
Best of luck to you all. I hope you get accepted and shine in your programs,

AMEN TO THAT!
Look I said this to a post in small letters in hot pink with no paragraph formation and got blasted. So, you want my advice, years of expertise and knowledge?MAKE IT READABLE.
Zoo,
I know the post you are speaking of....I could not nor did I want to even try to read that!
I have also posted the same comment you posted in the past.
If people wish to be read, why, oh why, can't they make them readable?
What is the problem with creating paragraphs?
I take a quick glance and if there are no paragraphs and it is longer than 6 or 8 sentances, I do not even attempt. I just go on to the next topic.
KUDOS to you!

ps, I think the post to which you refer was in hot pink...not exactly reader friendly.
I barely type out net language aside from the usual LOL because there's no point in typing that out, but the other shortcuts (R u there?) that crap annoys me to no end. I've been teased about how I usually run out of space in my texts because I don't use shortcuts, it's just a pet peeve and I can't STAND the way it looks. The problem is that it does go outside of texting. People have incorporated it into their language and that's just plain creepy.
The one that gets me is "alot." Come on people, a lot is two words.
Patricia, et all,
For your enjoyment:
http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/
Go to this site/her name is Allie Brosh/and look for her blog on "alot"...vs "a lot":D
It will be listed on the right side with the former blogs.
It's hilarious and it certainly cured me of writing alot.....then stick around and read some of her other stuff.
Especially check out her "a better pain scale" she is dead on...and not even in the health care profession.
Enjoy!

As someone who does both, I totally concur with your comments - AND I realise that there are times and situations where I will write as I text! I don't think that's necessarily the reasons for the non responses, so many people will write this way these days - BUT I do think it's important that we try to keep our language alive and well.
Thanks for posting yr comments! Kp it up!

It wouldn't surprise me if the UK is experiencing this along with Canada and America. Are you a nurse in Canada?
Yes it has been going on for many many years in the UK. My son used to drive me crazy with his texting abbreviations and grammar now I am used to it.
I havent read the whole of this thread and somebody may well have said this already-initially when texting came out it was very expensive the abbreviations came about so that you could write longer messages using shorter words which meant you only had to send one message!!!
Of course kids being kids they still lost track of the amount of text messages sent because they have no understanding of moderation
My son would send a text message with one LETTER on in it, to question a recieved text message and these include
Y
?
U
K
All costing the same amount as if you sent a large text
