I saw a post asking why no one responded to the OP's other posts and it got me thinking. I should point out that this has NOTHING to do with her(?) posts other than it started the gears turning, but when I see a post written in txt, I shut it down and move on. If I see a post with a paragraph-and-a-half and no punctuation in it, I move on. If English is your second language, of course people will make allowances. But if you were raised with it, I make none.
I know it's expedient to use shortcuts. I know we're used to it because of the texting we do. That does not make it okay here. I got wall post on Facebook from an old boyfriend and I couldn't even read it because he refuses to spell things correctly. (Really, that's the only reason. )
If you want help, if you want to be taken seriously, IF YOU WANT GOOD GRADES, start using standard English. Please. Use proper grammar. Use punctuation, even if you're not sure if you're using the right ones. TRY. You can txt all you want in your off-time, but here, and at school or work, you need to communicate in a way that other people understand without having to translate. You will have to write papers in class. You will do a LOT of writing. If it's unintelligible, your grade will reflect that. It's in your own best interest, honestly.
Best of luck to you all. I hope you get accepted and shine in your programs,
cmonkey
Alright, I am not sure if I should thank you or not but I am officially HOOKED on this website! So, thanks.... I think:D
So glad you like it!
I discovered it about 2 months ago and I am still making my way through the older posts.
I never knew that there were other people that think like that....except for the people that live in my head
Also, if you enjoy her, go to the link and vote for Allie as the "worlds greatest blogger".

I'm there and I'm voting! Her site is awesome!!!! I laughed so hard at her latest post that I pulled a couple of abdominal muscles.
SO Glad you like her!!! She is my official "alter ego"...this is one of my favorite pictures.
Allie, herself, gave me permission to use this...it's now my screen saver at work...the yellow haired girl looks just like me and many of the things that happen to her have happened to me!

ps-picture credited to Hyperbole and a half...see above post for the link.
Here's my take: It's good to be highly discerning and critical when it comes to saving lives and making important decisions. But I think being so "Type A" that you have to knock on others unnecessarily, just to prove that you take your communication arts seriously, is a bit excessive. I think that this forum is for communication. If some are fine with the texting then gr8! If not, then simply do what the originator of the post does, and shut the message and move on. It's just like television. If you don't like the show, turn the channel, don't call for an outright censure on everything you find disagreeable.
I'm sooo not a Type A personality, but I do really care about writing and speaking well. Expressing my desire to see the English language handled with precision and panache does not mean that I am "knock[ing] on others unnecessarily" just to prove that I "take my communication arts seriously." I'm not out to prove anything to anyone.
The moderating staff frowns on the grammar and usage police causing friction in regular discussions. However, we do have a number of threads (including this one) about grammar and usage where such input is both appreciated and appropriate. To complain in this kind of thread, call the participants elitist Ivy League power washers and say we're not "inclusive" enough is ironic and a violation of your own advice. To wit--If you don't like the show, turn the channel."
I don't mean that in a harsh way. It's just that your desire for openness and inclusion doesn't appear to extend to those of us who value correct and careful speech and writing, even when we stay in our own well-defined corral.
I have been unable to load a spell check for on here, which is something I would love to have!Spelling is something I would love to be perfect at but I do have some issues.
A lot is something that I think happens when somebody types too fast and the words run together!
I wish that were true. However, I see this very frequently. It has been so commonly used that the blog I quote in the former post has an entire entry devoted to alot vs a lot.
I must confess, there were times in the past, that I used alot and it wasn't because I was typing too fast.
I learned my lesson after being ticketed by the "grammar police" ....I don't do that anymore.

You know I didnt know that! Seriously I really didnt know that people wrote alot as a word
I dont care about the 'grammar police'. I was taught very formally how to write back in school and corrected constantly by my mother at home when I spoke incorrectly. I guess over the years I have chilled especially when my son was a teenager!!! That was a steep learning curve for me regarding grammar and the English language!
For example if somebody said sick in my day it either meant-unwell or when referring to somebody who was perverted we would say 'they are sick'.
Now if the youth use Sick- it means great or fantastic!! I really cannot make the connection between the two versions!

Here's my take

I mean, we all review it, but this is an information sharing site, a site for "openness," not an Ivy League, or elitist pressure washer. Please try to be inclusive. Your experience, and articulate grammar prowess might really benefit (rub off on) someone!
Cheers and best wishes to all!
