Here's a question... how far in debt will you be when nursing school is all said and done? How many years are you spending in school? BSN or RN?
I will be $38,000 in debt after two years to earn an RN. This accounts for books and tuition and the loans I have to take to supplement my income and pay my bills while I'm working only part time. Wow, career changes are expensive...
I'm right with you too Pumpkin Head,
Life throws you curve balls,
I was working full time, hubby and I have a mortgage,
2 car payments, and I was 8 months preggo when the
company I worked for "downsized" and guess who one of the
lucky victims was? LOL
So needless to say I'm up to my eyeballs in loans, but hey
it will all be worth it in the end when I'm working and able to
provide for my family.
So far not in debt, but I had to dip into my 401K which is almost depleted. It was a hard call, because it is my retirement money, but then I thought that getting into a profession that you love is priceless. I am also hoping I can replenish the amount I took out within a few years. I do owe credit card balances and stuff like that, which is a pain, because I can only afford the minimum payment. But, you do what you have to do and make it work. I am suppose to graduate December 2008, so hopefully I will pass my boards and get a good paying job. I wish you all the best. I know it is hard to accrue debt or have to get loans or put stuff on credit cards, but education is an investment.
I have $30,000 in student loans for my BSN plus substantial cc debt as I used them my last year of school so I could work less and then quit working altogether my last semester. At least they are low interest!
I am now living below my means and my 8 year old car has been paid for for a long time and thank God has low miles. Needless to say...I am being taxed to death with my new income.... funny how Uncle Sam is always there with his hand out!
I guess the BMW and the summer house at the beach are still a few years away!!
I would like to think that I am living the "All American Dream"-in debt up to my eyeballs!!! I have thought about it and I know so many people who owe mortgages for more than the total of what my husband and I owe on the house, student loans, and cc. And they still have the student loans and cc on top of their mortgage. I just keep telling myself that when all is said and done, it will be paid off in a few short years.
I will have about $20K once I am done with my BSN. I didn't need that money for school itself because I got scholarships and financial aid. I need that money to pay for living expenses and to pay off our credit cards. I will try to pay off the student loans ASAP once I start working full time.

I surely do feel blessed. I work full time and go to school nights and weekends. So far I have been able to pay for 2 years of prereqs out of pocket. I am starting a two year hospital based diploma program in Aug of 08 and they have a yearly fee that students pay of about 1000+ a kit costing 200 and books and uniforms cost another 500. I have been able to work those off, they let you pay the l000 over a 3 month period. For the tuition it is 9000 a year but if you work for them for 2 years you owe them nothing. Even if you don't work for them, they then will give you a no interest loan in order to pay it back. I plan on working for the hospital when I am done. It has been voted one of the best places to work in my area in 2007, so I am sure I can stick it out. They also offer tuition reimbursement with programs on site, I plan to continue to with my education as far as I can, with out burning out. The worst it could be is about 18k or hopefully if everything goes as planned this is the one time that I would be really happy to have a ZERO!
