Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing in Michigan
Hi! I will be starting my last semester of nursing school this winter semester. The last rotation I had was in Psych and I loved it! So now I am trying to locate any hospital or private facility where I can start as a psych nurse (GN). However, I'm not exactly how to go about searching for these places besides looking at the main hospitals. So I was hoping you could help! It doesn't matter where in Michigan the facility is (although I do live on the East side of Michigan in Macomb County), I'm willing to relocate! So if you could just spew off some names for me, I'd be really grateful! Thanks a million!:bowingpur

IV Meds
I wasn't sure where to post this question, because I am a student, not an instructor, but I have a question. I was searching this forum and noticed that most of your students give IV meds in their first year. I was shocked! Because at the program that I am in (I just finished my first year; its ADN)we don't pass IV meds until our last semester. In fact we don't even learn about IV's until then and we are NOT allowed to start an IV in the program EVER. Does where you live or what type of ins. the school has, affect the type of experiences that we as students can have? Are we the only school out there like this? I just think that IV's are a huge part of nursing and that it is something that we should have learned from the beginning. We can give all other meds, just not IV. We cannot even document on the patency of an IV either. Thank you for your time!!! All feedback is appreciated!

No I wouldn't recommend nursing
I don't have the stamina to go through the entire 25 pages. But it makes me sick to hear people say that nursing is a terrible career! I am only a student. But here's what I want to say. What did you expect nursing to be? Some glamourous job where you just "save the day" all of the time? Of course you're going to be cleaning up feces and mucous and vomit and blood. Of course you're going to be giving enemas and changing ostomy bags. Yes doctors will yell at you. Patient may scream at you and family members of those patients may do the same. The paperwork is endless. You don't always get off of your shift on time. BUT... If it means that you save one patient from suicide, or teach one patient how to lower their blood sugars or if you help one person feel better about themselves by just brushing their hair... isn't it all worth it? Isn't that why we are here; to help in any way we can? If you aren't ready to be super stressed for the rest of your life, than maybe this isn't the career path for you!

How did you pay for nursing school?
I am in my first semester. I am receiving $4500/ year from financial aid, $10,000 a year from government loans and a ton more from private student loans. I decided not to work while I was in school. I felt it was more important for my little ones to see me and have more study time. It's scary living off of loans and having no income. My husband is in school too, so he doesn't bring anything in. But it's worth it, I think. You can only TRY to support a family of 5 on minimum wage for so long before you realize that it doesn't work! But truly, this is my dream. I'd pay 3 times the amount if I had too!

Anybody here going to SC4???
They don't have a year to year waitlist. They put people on a waitlist to fill the spots of the people who drop before the program starts. Once the program starts, they drop the waitlist and everyone who didn't get in can just reapply next year. Oh, I am working on my ADN, not LPN.

What kind of Backpack?
I've been told a rolling scrapbook storage thingy is great to use. It has ton of compartments to hold all of your writing utensils and is biggest enough to hold all of your books. So I bought one. I got my from Jo Ann's. They usually have 20% off coupons in the paper every week or so.

Oh I am so excited to finally start the program. I had to decline after I'd be accepted two years ago (family issues) and am now finally about to finish!!!! I also have children (6 yrs. old, 4 yrs. old and 9 months) I am nervous, excited, scared, and every other emotion all rolled into one! I keep telling all of my family/ friends that they won't really see me for the next 2 years!!!:smackingf:bugeyes: But it will be so worth it in the end! Good Luck to you and to everyone else!

My orientation!
Well we had ours and it sounds similar. My schedule was already chosen for me. I go Mon-Thurs. I was shocked by my clinical hours though; 7:15 am - 9:15 pm. Talk about torture! Then we have to buy our books... early. I have 7 chapters to read already. The books I have to buy for the Fall semester total over $900 not including the $245/ credit hour and the stethoscope, shoes, scrubs I have yet to buy. Oh get this... we have to BUY the SYLLABUS at the book store for $20/ class! What??? I've never heard of that!!!:angryfire And they made us sign a form saying that we cannot work more than 20 hours/ weeks!:trout:

Are you Happy?
I truly believe life is what you make it! For example although I am in a terrible financial situation right now, however I am very happy. I have 3 delightful, healthy children and an amazing husband. When times get rough and I can barely put food on the table, I am always able to remember what blessings I do have and try not to dwell on the "things" I don't have!

Any Baker flint Students?
Why did you only apply at one college? I too go to Baker ( of CLinton Township) and know what I was headed for going in. I maintain a 4.0 and a decent NET score, but still I know my chances are slim. But I also made sure to apply to atleast 5 other schools. I've already been accepted to SC4. But Baker is much closer to where I live. ALways keep your options open. Most colleges and some universities take Baker credits!

SC4 vs. Baker College
Hi everyone, I've been recently accepted into SC4's Nursing Program. I am very excited. However that is my backup school. I am really hoping to get into Baker (Clinton Township). I have a 4.0 and just took the NET Test and am awaiting the results. I hope my score is high enough to get in this fall or else I will definately be going to SC4. So here's my question: What are my odds of getting into Baker College given my GPA? And are any of you soon-to-be fellow SC4 or Baker nursing students? Which program do you think is better? Any opinions would be appreciated!!! Thanks! Jen

Too poor to become a nurse?
Hi, I am in a very similar situation. We are low income as well, with 3 kids (7 months, 4 years and 6 years old). My husband just got laid off too! Before that we made a combined income of $1,600/month. Yes things are tight, but we manage. Here, in Michigan, my tuition is paid for through financial aid. Then I take out student loans to pay bills and school supplies. This comes to about $20,000/year in student loans. I apply for all of the grants that I can and usually through that I get about $4,000 more a year. It is $245.00/ credit hour at my school. Here's the deal: if you want it that bad, you will do what you can to make it. IMHO if you have to eat ramen noodles and corn for the next 2 years it's worth it. Nurses not only get paid good, but have a rewarding job too! BTW, I know a girl that has 7 kids and is doing the program just fine!:smackingf
