Advice Nurse
Hello, I am seeking some insight into Advice Nursing specifically within Kaiser. Are you able to work from home? How are you liking the position? Based on your opinion any major pros/cons. Any tips would be helpful.

Resigning
Hello, I personally think you should accept the position and make sure you get all information in writing re: pay/position. In order to advance in your nursing career you have to take on new learning opportunities. I left my first nursing job before I fulfilled my obligation, but I had to do what I had to do. It is hard finding acute care jobs when you are at a long term care facility so go for it. Definitely express your gratitude and give them as much notice as possible so that they can replace your position. I wish you well and very excited for this new opportunity. Keep us updated on new job!!

Chewing Gum
Hello, I chew gum at work for my "nerves" if I need to meet with a patient I remove it. It can look unprofessional if chewing gum and talking with a patient; even over the phone. But I love chewing gum; especially if I am trying to avoid overeating.

SCNSC
Hello, Do you work for Kaiser? What union do you have? I haven't heard anything yet about pay or benefits. I was told that I could contact HR and at least get the pay amount. I work at the Northern California Kaiser.

Head/neck patient and taste changes
I have experience with working with H&N patients that are having chemo/RT. First off this is the hardest treatment that I have witnessed. Really tough. Usually our dietitian will follow them. Usually for these patients I will have to arrange IV hydration because of dehydration. If weight loss continues then a feeding tube is needed because as we all know adequate nutrition is essential to healing. Once chemo and RT cease taste should return. Some patients report that everything taste like salt or metal. I encouraged them to eat whatever taste good or tolerable. Our dietitian suggests Scandishakes because these are high caloric. Discuss this without outpatient dietitian. I hope this helps. Feel free to reach out to me for any other questions. I have been a Radiation Oncology nurse for 6 years.

Looking For Insight
Hello, I work in an outpatient clinic with oncology patients. Currently there is one nurse on vacation which has left two of us to cover her patients. Today I found out the other nurse I am working with is not coming in to work tomorrow to attend a meeting that is all day. This is not a mandatory meeting. This nurse had a private conversation with our manager to express her interest in going to this meeting. Our manager did not inform me that this nurse has been approved to attend this meeting, mind you I will be the only nurse working. My manager did this few months ago where she gave this nurse a day off when I would be by myself and did not check to see how I felt working alone. I had a conversation with my manager about this and thought that we came to the understanding that staffing issues would be discussed as a unit; not one on one. Where is the concern for quality patient care and safety? I feel this manager is giving this nurse "special" treatment because she keeps her updated with whats going on in the front office. I have asked my manager before that I would like to know when she is approving time off for other nurses and I would be working alone. Now I am trying to find what my next course of action should be? Contacting my union rep? I'm really upset right now and seeking advice in case I am taking things too personal and being emotional. Thanks for your help!!

Kaiser's pay/benefits for staff nurse 2?
I would agree that unfortunately it is very hard to get into Kaiser without any experience. I would suggest taking an offer that will provide you with acute care experience. I would do that for 1 year. Not sure if you have an interest in OB, ICU or ER but I do see a lot of positions for that. Gain your experience where you can and then try to get in with Kaiser.
