Poll: where are you going when you finish school?

I am curious to see where you think you will go once you finish school. Even though all we have done are 2 clinical days in a nursing home I already have my heart set on one of a couple different places. I want to go to Labor & Delivery, Psych, or Renal Dialysis. So where do you think(or know) you may want to be once you graduate? ~Twintoo

Well I just got a job in Orthopaedics.. Probably do that for a while.. Then who knows...

WOW...alot of rippin on Florida here. I, for one, adore this great state (except for Lakeland...LOL). Alot of people, especially non-natives, totally miss the beauty of this state. There may not be beautiful mountains to gaze at but the sunsets on the ocean are extremely beautiful (not to mention romantic) and some of the leaves do turn in north Florida. The marshlands are beautiful as well as the wildlife it harbours. The lakes and the streams and lets not forget the SPRINGS (Clearest, bluest water you can get) City water is horrible, I dont know what they do to it. I find the Springs the most beautiful attraction of them all..I guess you really cant appreciate them unless you've seen them up close and personal (I am a cave diver). The Keys are beautiful but dont go there expecting white sandy beaches...if you dont dive, fish, boat or party...DONT GO !!! You will be bored out of your mind. West Palm Beach is a beautiful area (if you know where to look), I'm not talking about Palm Beach either. There are really nice areas near the beach and there are many equestrian areas as well. Traffic is bad but it moves most of the time...not like Lakeland which has half the traffic and twice the problems.

The tourist traps in this state suck, it would do my heart some good to see Disney up and leave along with all the other crap that have ruined this state ...but it does bring in revenue I suppose.

The small towns in North Florida are amazing, I just love that kind of life, not to mention thats where most of the springs are. There is a lot to do here if you just open up and take it all in....try to stay away from the bigger cities....they are WAYYYY over rated.

There is sooo much to do in this state...you just have to know where to look. HINT: Not at the tourist traps !! Did I mention viewing a beautiful sunset from the air??? What about all the sports teams we have? Nature trails, golf courses, car races, Theme Parks :imbar deep sea fishing, fresh water fishing, brackish water fishing, tubing, water skiing, lobstering, hunting, ATV's and motorcross, there are movies and opras as well as outdoor theaters, even ice skating...the list goes on and on..........the people can be kinda weird though....LOL.;)

I am into more of the social work nursing things... psych, community health, transcultural nursing, correctional nursing... we'll see where I go! That's the thing about being an RN... lots of choices for everyone!

Okay all of you wanting out of other states and living near the ocean... why not come to Hawaii to work? It's gorgeous! Sure some things cost more... but you get what you pay for... and Paradise is not free!

I'd like to stay here, but I think hubby has other thoughts... and he's so supportive of me that I will think of him when I decide where I will practice.

I have a trip planned to Hawaii after graduation and the NCLEX. Gonna stay for a month to relax and enjoy....might even stay there depending..........

I would love to work in Hawaii! My mom lived in Makakilo for a while and we almost packed up and moved there then. How is the market for nurses there?

I am also sticking up for Florida - and I live in one of those small S. FL. towns :) If I were single I'd rather be in a larger town but with a husband and three little kids it's ok. All the things pilotJim was talking about, the state parks are also nice (I think they got the award for best in the nation last year). My area is actually very agricultural and I rarely even think of Disneyworld and all that... I can hear cows mooing from my house. I was raised in the panhandle which we called LA- Lower Alabama, it is nothing like S. FL at all. I live in the S. interior now (and have lived in Ga, NC, and Pa in between) and we don't get much rain like most people think of for FL - we actually have cactus in some of the prairies! And I love the live oak hammocks. We got a boat this year and we have really enjoyed going out on the local lakes/rivers and of course going to the beaches on both coasts.

Only bad thing right now about the small town is I have a 2 - yes 2 - hour commute to school for my BSN program. It will take me longer to get through it since I won't do the drive more than 2 or 3 days/wk.

Dh and I have talked about me doing the traveling nurse thing for a while when I'm done. He'd have a turn with the kids and probably homeschool them. Talking about change, he wants this southern girl to go to Alaska for a stint!

I graduate in December, and already have a position waiting for me in CICU. (where I am currently a Nurse Tech) The hospital is great, and they are paying for my critical care classes and ACLS training. Ii'll then have the added benefit of precepting for another two mos with a great critical care RN. Of course, when it's all over, I will have to work nights, but considering the pay is better for nights anyway, I think it will be worth it.

I am also from Florida (25+ years) and after spending a year or two at this hospital, would like to try traveling for awhile. The area of the state I am in is very crowded, and I would rather be in a small town.

Hawaii is gorgeous! I remember most the beaches and the ocean. I'm told the ocean in Hawaii and Cancun are the most beautiful and clear. I will say, however, I was in Maui which was a huge tourist trap. But it was worth it :)

No traveling for me but I do want to go back home to PA. I miss the people there!

CarolineRN,

I dont live in Bradenton but I do some diving there. Along the coastline I just love it but you are right....tooo dang crowded. I was going to open up a massage therapy business in that area but couldn't afford to do it at the time....but the water is beautiful and Anna Maria Island is fantastic. The past few times I have been there, I have had the beach virtually all to myself...a rare thing I know. I just cant get Jimmy Buffett out of my head....:roll

Wow...a 2 hour commute??? Can you do any of those courses online??? Yeah, if you live around the Lake Okeechobee area, a boat is a must. You have the lake and then there is the Atlantic on the East on the Gulf on the West. I did my flight training at Ft. Pierce and commuted from West Palm Beach everyday (75 miles one way) and didnt enjoy that at all.....it was more dangerous traveling to the airport than my actual flight training.

Where are you going for your BSN?

I think Alaska would be a great experience but I dont think I would really want to live there too long (not more than a year or two). But I hear the job market for nurses is great.

Specializes in Hospice.

:D Right now I do 2 days a week Employee Health (and I DON'T want to keep doing that) I also work weekends (nights) in ER/OB (we are a very small rural hospital) so we do it all.

My hope is to become more proficient in OB, I would love to be a Nurse MidWife. I just know that where I work now, they put new RN's in ICU and charge positions. I've worked there 13 years, and as an LPN I don't want that to happen to me.

So, Im confused. Where does my loyalty lie? I mean I graduate in May and our CNO keeps asking me not to leave.

UGH

I would really love L & D, but I guess I may have to "pay my dues" in med surg first.

Specializes in LTC, ER, ICU,.

my "heart" is set on er. i am too intrigued with critical care as my education progresses. a "whole" world of possibilities to consider and enjoy in nursing, simply amazing!

as an lpn already, i have worked med/surg and said i didn't want to return as an rn, but, who knows. if the hospital that hires me as an rn will only allow working first on med/surg as a stepping stone to trauma or critical care, so be it!

i guess i will not be the first to "eat" their "words". about not going to med/surg...oh well...although i won't give up without a "fight"...hehe
