You need to find your local community college and take English, math, science, history, sociology, psychology... you need to go to school.

Most community colleges have developmental or remedial courses in English and math. The courses start at about the junior high level. Don't feel shy about going to the local community college, taking the placement exams for math and English, then starting where you need to start.

Good for you! It is not always easy to step up and admit you may need help. Kudos for trying to better yourself! I would begin with the suggestions given above. Bottom line is: You will get out what you put in. It will take time and effort!

Good luck to you sweetie! I hope you get everything you want.

hi amy,

i realize how much courage it took for you to write your post. first of all, i'm so sorry about your dad. my dad died when i was just a little bit older than you are now. it's hard, but it does get easier as time goes on.

the community college idea is a good one. call the one or ones nearby and ask to speak with the admissions department. they will ask if you have a high school diploma or a ged. if you don't have either one yet, they will be able to tell you how and where to get a ged. my husband is a college teacher and his suggestion is that you start out by taking only one or two classes to get started. that way you won't get in over your head. he suggested you might start off with remedial english and remedial or basic math. they will probably give you what's called a placement test to find out which class you would do best in. basic math often is a review of fractions, decimals, addition, subtraction, long division and multiplication plus, maybe, some beginning algebra. basic english comp reviews grammar, verb agreement, spelling, writing paragraphs, parts of speech, and progresses to writing short papers. there will probably be courses offered that improve your reading skills and comprehension, as well as those that teach you how to study. if something called freshman studies or freshman orientation is offered, take it. take advantage of the tutoring or learning center because they're good. use the library and don't be afraid to ask lots and lots of questions. the only dumb question is the one you don't ask.

just remember that all of us who come to the allnurses.com site, are here to help you, answer questions, give you lots of internet hugs, support you and help keep you going as you begin your education. keep coming back because we're here for you.:icon_hug:
