First of all, school is going to be expensive and you are going to have to have a funding source. You need to find out what is available and I can tell you that federal funding in terms of grant money is available for students that are below the poverty live. I don't know what your income level is but you need to check this out. More on this in a moment.
If you have a nursing school in mind that you wish to attend, you need to set up an appointment with the admissions department of the nursing school to find out what courses will be required for you to get into nursing school. And pay close attention to this information because not all courses will transfer. For example, if you will be taking a chemistry at a junior college, you should make sure that this will be a chemistry that will transfer to that school.
Once you determine what course you need to take to get it, you need to go to the college where you want to take those courses. Usually junior college is a bit less expensive. Get to financial aid as soon as you can and make applications for grant and scholarship money. Do it as early as you can before the semester starts because the money runs out quick. Do not overload yourself on credit hours for your first semester. You have to get used to college life and you need to get a feeling of what you can handle. Also, if you are going to be working part time, you will not be able to take as many hours. You will need to focus on your math, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, and microbiology courses because they are key foundations to what you will be using in nursing school and I GUARANTEE YOU that you will use that information.
If you do not have your GED yet or you need to refresh your basic math, English or science courses, the junior college can do this for you and the counseling center on campus can assist you. Good luck and let us know if we can help.
And I know how it is to be without a father. I was an only child and my father died when I was 9. I am 54 years old now and not a single day goes by that I don't think of him. God bless you and you keep working toward your dreams. It is never too late to get where you want to be. And we ARE HERE to help you.

Good luck! One of my closest friends was homeschooled and just completed remedial math - I'm so proud of her! Best of luck to you as well on your journey to be a nurse! :redpinkhe
