Plan B!

This is a just for fun question!

Did you have a plan B in nursing school? Like if you failed or did not like it. I know most people were probably all in or this was their one and only chance to further their education so I don't mean to be insensitive to those situations. My plan B is radiation technology.

As a midwife that was definitely where my brain went first!

Specializes in Education.

Art therapy.

Or stripping. So many strip clubs near where I went to school...

Specializes in CVOR, CVICU/CTICU, CCRN.

Medical school - yes, that career would have been my second choice.

Specializes in Mental Health, Gerontology, Palliative.

Nursing was my plan B

My intial degree was in social policy. To work in the area I would have had to do masters level and really didnt like it enough.

So then I debated between nursing and doing a masters in applied social work. I didnt really like social work enough to do it all the time and decided that nursing was a much more versatile career.

I havent looked back. Best decision I ever made

Specializes in 15 years in ICU, 22 years in PACU.
I've got two left feet so that's not an option for me! :roflmao:

I CANNOT believe you regulars are gonna make me say it. Camming is the Plan B of choice.

Well, NOT having a Plan B doesn't mean you're NOT being smart, just that you have so little expectation for failing out of the program that spending time devising a new course of your life in such an event is a waste of time. Could it happen...? Sure. But if you're someone who hasn't failed anything in school, generally does well in school, there's no reason to think "what happens if I fail in school"...KWIM? I suppose I could have a plan in place for what I might do if both of my vehicles AND my husband's vehicle became inoperable on the same day at the same time...but the likelihood of that occurring is pretty remote, so I don't.

If someone's academic history is sketchy.....if his/her history on following through with things is questionable....sure, a backup plan might be a rather good idea. But for others....it's nothing more than a distraction to do it.

You can be offended if you want, but I've not had an easy life. Plan B is there for when shiitake happens.

I do think it isn't smart not to have a Plan B. The universe doesn't always fall in line with our plans. You miss the grade by 2/10ths of a point. You get fired, people die, houses burn down, schools shut down.

Some people get into nursing school and realize they are slowly torturing themselves.

Plan B's come in handy.

I will be honest and admit that I did not work as a CNA before entering nursing school so even though I tried to gather information online and ask my nurse friends about thier jobs I knew I would not know what I was truly getting myself into until clinical.

I'm not the type of person that will ever find my passion in their work (or at least I dont think I am) so I went into nursing optimistically but for financial stability. That being said I spent five years in a job I completely loathed (dental assisting) so I at least want to like my job a little.

That's the main reason I have a Plan B.

Uh oh. Dental assisting has been one of my many Plan B's since I realized that I will, sooner rather than later, run screaming from nursing.

p.s. I also clicked on this thread because I thought it was about emergency contraception :)

It took me awhile to stop waffling and finally decide 100% on nursing. I honestly couldn't really picture myself doing anything else, it just feels right. If I don't get into nursing school the first try, the plan is to retake my lower grade pre-reqs, continue to work at the hospital, and apply for the next cycle. If that fails and/or nursing doesn't feel like a good fit anymore, I imagine I would go into nutrition or public health.
