Just posted on a thread about people being scared of clowns, as my dd is.

just wonderin, does anyone else have a phobia?

i do, it's birds, am absolutely and totally terrified of them, from a budgie to an eagle, they all scare the bejeesus out of me. Can't pass a pidgeon..(yuk..fearless critters), and I will go out of my way to avoid the scary chickens at the kiddos farmyard.

Is anyone else so irrationally scared of anything, or am I the only big scaredy cat here??? BTW...birds are a hard thing to avoid, they are everywhere, and I can scan an area in seconds to make sure there are none around before I know it's safe to go in or out!!

Seriously, it's a very inhibiting thing, a phobia, and it's getting worse, not better with age!

I responded to the clown post - guilty as charged.

I have an exteme fear of wasps and bees. I'm not allergic to them, just deathly afraid. It annoys my husband to no end during the summer because I cannot enjoy the outdoors without one eye open for those flying beasts.

Here are my phobiasw

Gephyrophobia or Gephydrophobia or Gephysrophobia- Fear of crossing bridges.

Coulrophobia- Fear of clowns

For those w/phobia of birds, it has a name too Ornithophobia- Fear of birds

not sure how accurate this is but here's a link for names of phobias

i have a extreme fear of scorpions... uggggggggg ugggggg just the thought makes me creep out.

but my real phobia which is very extreme is wind, thunderstorms and tornado's. i have to be treated for this and have medication that i must take. since i live in north texas it is not easy for me during spring and fall. i immediately get diarrhea and vomit . i have become suicidal. i have injured myself trying to knock myself out . it is so bad ive had to notify my job cause if we had real real bad weather ...you will find me in a bathroom corner praying instead of taking care of patients. thank you post traumatic disorder- my house flipped several times in 1993 during a tornado with me in it....so i live everyday with this....

I jump and scream if someone comes up behind me and I'm not expecting them. Or if I walk into a room thinking there is no one there and someone is there. Or if I glance in a mirror and see someone when I had no idea someone was home.

That drives my husband crazy . . . . that I jump up and scream if he walks up behind me or any of the above.

I have a photo of me with a large garden snake around my neck.

I've stepped on a tarantula accidently - gross cause it crunched like bones.

I reached into the dryer one time and felt something rubbery - it was a dead bat. I did jump and scream when that happened.

I love birds.

yeah, for whatever reason, snakes don't bother me. that's not to say i've got pet cobras, but i'm not freaked out by the mere sight of a snake.

a few years ago pre-child, we visited this place:

(don't click if you're afraid of snakes)

really cool. there's a king cobra there that's 10-ish feet long, green & black mambas, all sorts of poisonous reptiles. very interesting.

I'm really interested as to why we are phobic or scared of what we are. In the case of mjl, the birds in her hair, thats a valid reason to be scared. in my case, I can't remember ever having such a bad experience with birds, that would make me so darn petrified of them..palpitations, sweats, crying, the whole shebang..very embarrassing. Even using my poor children as a shield against a pidgeon..(I know..ring social services!!!) (they find it hilarious btw, and instinctively know to 2shhoo" the birds away..unless they are feelin mean that is! )..and one day I met a student I had mentored, in town, we were chatting, when two bold as brass sky rats strolled up to us....and I used HER as a shield!!!!!! OMG...Mortified..I looked like such a woose! And I was!

It's more embarrassing not to be scared of the common things like spiders or snakes, cutie wee birdies are everywhere and people just go "Why?"

If anything ever happened to me to make me so afraid of spiders, I've totally blocked it out.

I don't want pet snakes either, but I can look at them. I don't want mice in my house, but I can look at those too and have held a pet one or two.

I'm not very fond of big dogs, either. I was very afraid of dogs as a child; one jumping up on me just scared me silly. Then we had neighbors who had a Great Dane. They thought it was quite funny when the other kids in the neighborhood were scared of the dog. Or, they did until a girl across the street ran into the path of a car, running from the dog, and was hit.

She survived, but the dog mysteriously disappeared shortly thereafter. The family lied about the dog (Oh, no one is afraid of her, all the neighborhood kids come over and play with the dog) so nothing was done. I've always thought the girl's dad knew exactly what happened to it!!!

Commuter, I am certainly feeling your pain...I've suffered from the worst phobia of snakes and other reptiles since the age of 3 when I saw my dad kill a snake...even typing the word makes me shake. I've experienced all of the symptoms you described, and in the sixth grade a jerk found out my fear and threw a HUGE picture of one right in my face and I had an awful panic attack.

A few weeks ago, I was in Best Buy pricing out surround sounds (yikes!$!$$$) when (Planet Earth was playing) a snake popped up on EVERY screen around me...I almost passed out and literally RAN out of the store shaking and crying. The poor sales guy probably thought I was a looney.

Needless to say, it's an irrational fear but one I've had for as long as I can remember. Numerous people have tried to "cure" me of it (surprising me with rubber snakes, showing me pictures, trying to get me to walk past the reptiles in a pet store) but it has always ended terribly. Sorry to go on so long, but this has affected me for so long and is a sensitive topic for me.

Very welcome, Duckie. My mom reacts to snakes the same way you do, so I've learned over the years to warn before posting anything remotely having to do with them.
