Phobias anyone???

just wonderin, does anyone else have a phobia?

i do, it's birds, am absolutely and totally terrified of them, from a budgie to an eagle, they all scare the bejeesus out of me. Can't pass a pidgeon..(yuk..fearless critters), and I will go out of my way to avoid the scary chickens at the kiddos farmyard.

Is anyone else so irrationally scared of anything, or am I the only big scaredy cat here??? BTW...birds are a hard thing to avoid, they are everywhere, and I can scan an area in seconds to make sure there are none around before I know it's safe to go in or out!!

Seriously, it's a very inhibiting thing, a phobia, and it's getting worse, not better with age!

I have an extreme phobia of snakes. Whenever I see a snake, my sympathetic nervous system goes into overdrive with the palpitations, perspiration, jumpiness, and the urge to defecate. In other words, snakes scare the crap out of me. I know the fear is irrational.

Unfortunately, I live in an area where snakes can become really active during the spring, summer and fall.

OMG, it's wonderful to know my sister and I aren't the only people with a bird phobia!!! She's scared to death of 'em, and since my own traumatic experience with them at age four (when a couple of parakeets decided to make a nest out of my waist-length hair) I've been afraid of ALL flying critters.

I'm also petrified of spiders, I'm claustrophobic, and I don't much care for heights either. (I know, what a wimp.) I'm even a little afraid of bathtub drains.....but that's a whole 'nother story!

Spiders!!! Just typing the word makes my skin crawl!!

mjl..welcome to my wee group of birdie phobes..(thought i was in it all alone honey!!) OMG...a bird in your HAIR...i'm shiverin thinkin about it! I also cant stand flyin things like bats, moths, even butterflies, if they flap around your head!

Spiders, they dont worry me, I'm the spider catcher, I put them outside when others are scared, but my mum and my great big 5"10 son are petrified of the "inceys"!

Commuter, snakes, I understand just why you would be scared of these critters. My Daughters had a pet snake , darn thing lived for nearly nine years in their bedroom.....they loved it, I never touched it, although it didn't petrify me, I just felt it was yukky.

apart from obvious experiences, like a bird being stuck in your hair..(eeeerggghhhh), I wonder why we are scared of such things? Past life stuff perhaps?? ...was I eaten by a chicken in my last life???

I'm claustrophobic and hate elevators and take the stairs often. It's good for me to do that.

Yeah, taking the stairs frequently is better for one's health versus riding the elevator all the time. Due to your phobia, you are very fortunate to have an option that does not involve taking the elevator to get from one floor to the next.

But Tweety, what if you have to take a patient in the elevator? how do you combat your "OMG" thing?

Oh yes. It's not that I'm deathly afraid, but I'm just in the habit of avoding them when possible. Obviously it's not always possible. Nursing has taught me to conquer many of my fears. :w00t:

Climbing the steps is healthy, but sometimes I'm crazy. The other day I walked up five flights and realized I forgot to stop at the security office for something for a patient, when down and climbed right back up within a minute and was gasping for breath when I was done. LOL

I have an extreme fear of hair dryers. I don't know if there's a name for that kind of phobia?!

I really really am terrified of flying over water or driving over bridges. I do it, but it's a real struggle.

This isn't a phobia, because I can do it without physical symptoms, but driving up or down steep hills scares me to the extent that if I know ahead of time, I change my route to avoid them.

I also don't like rodents, but that isn't irrational as far as I'm concerned.

I also hate public speaking, but again, I can do it. I just don't want to.
