PHCC Fall 2010 applicants? You out there??

Published

:-)

Well, I am finished with the pre-reqs, as of December. Have taken the TEAS once but will take it again. I have met with a few advisors and one prof in the nursing dept on East. I cannot get any clear and concise information really and it's frustrating. My GPA is relatively low, comparatively (sp?) and I am trying to guage my actual chances of getting into the program. I am only applying to PHCC (either campus) and the not knowing is killing me.

So where is everyone else? I am ready to get my stuff turned in. And then the wait.

I think it will be pretty hard to get into a program with a 3.4. I know PHCC is super selective. Trying maybe SPC wouldn't be a bad idea but if you are not a resident it will be pretty hard to get in there too. If you figure something else out please post it. :)

Awesome - your words of encouragement have just made my night. Bravo.

Everything is done and turned in! Whew, I'm glad that is over. High GPA (though not a 4.0), average TEAS, and Pasco county resident.

They didn't want anything but the app, proof of app fee and copy of DL...when I jokingly said that I really had more I wanted to "tell them" besides what was on the form all they'd say is "well, they're looking at your pre-reqs too. I said "that's too bad, I'm more than just a bunch of statistics!". They smiled understandingly, but that was it.

Time to sit & wait...they said it would probably be the end of the month before we'd hear anything. Good luck everyone!!

FWIW - SPC had 700 applicants for 90 seats in the first pool (seats filled to 70%). Cut off GPA was 3.7-something and ALL pre-reqs done by March 1st deadline. The remainder of the 700 applicants are in the process of being considered for the 2nd pool. Not great odds....a LOT more pre-reqs, as well.

Jumping in on this thread :) If it gets bumped, maybe more applicants will post, and we will all have more to think about!

I'm Jennifer. I have applied to both the LPN (day) and the RN programs. I submitted an 87.1 TEAS. I have a 4.0 pre-req GPA, and expect to have a 4.0 co-req GPA after the summer (taking Ethics, everything else is done, thank goodness!). I have a bachelor's from USF in Social Work/Sociology. I am a newly-single- still-stay-at-home-mother of three.

I am ready to DO THIS!! :yeah:

Goodluck Jennifer!! :)

My name is Yasmin. I have a 4 year old son and I was a stay at home mom for 3 years while my husband worked. I've been back in school at PHCC for a year now and I'm ready to do this too! I applied for the RN program and my gpa is a 3.77 and TEAS score composite of 85.9. I hope it's enough, if not I will take the TEAS one more time and January it's on!!

I apologize if you were offended by my comment. I have been applying to nursing programs for a while and I have a very similar GPA as you in the pre-req. My intent was to let you know there are other options out there. If this is something you really want I do recommend looking at different avenues. It will help keep your options open. I was very close minded whenever I started and I wanted the RN program and nothing less and look at me now still trying years later. Don't get down if you have to keep trying but do look at other programs as well, there are a lot of options.

I agree...don't get discouraged! Someone has to fill those seats and it might as well be you...or me...or someone else here.

Some advice if I may be so bold:

Research your options and figure out where you're willing to start and factor in how long it may take. If I had known a year ago, what I know now (how hard/competitive this is),I would have gone right to a LPN program, so I could start working (was laid off last year). And then working towards my RN. But that's hindsight. Instead I chose to do my prerequisites to get into a RN program, but not just one particular college's RN. I'm currently applying to several colleges in the hopes of getting in somewhere...and that also includes LPN programs.

Now, I'm waiting on answers for the Fall 2010 programs...but also looking out a little farther at schools to apply & reapply in the Spring if I don't get started in August. I'll have to do a CNA class before so I can go to work (unemployment may be running out in September). I took note cards and listed each "Plan" on a note card, and then labeled them in preference order with deadlines. For Fall 2010, I have Plans A - G. If one doesn't work out (i.e. I wasn't accepted into the RN-EAYL program at SPC)...make a note and set it aside. Work your plan. Persevere!! And continue taking classes that may be what you need to transfer to another school (meeting their prereqs) or will go towards your ASN.

So, don't limit yourself either with your thoughts or to just one school. There are many paths to reaching your goal. Keep moving forward!! You can do it!!

Thanks scrap! I love the notecard idea. I do lists on paper and pros and cons but you are the master!!! I love it!!!

I'm pretty much limited to PHCC. Here's why:

HCC - not in-county

PCC - not in-county

SPC - would do the EAYL so I could hopefully get the interview part to override me not being in-county. But I live almost in Z-hills. The thought of having to drive out there for 4+ years (2 for school, 2-3 for contract post-grad) just doesn't sit well. I have a family and small children and nursing school be damned, there's just some things I can't compromise, kwim?

USF - my GPA is way too low, I need to retake chem lab and I have no time to do volunteer hours

Keiser - way too $$$ as we do not take out loans so my dad and I are bankrolling my education.

I am full of excuses!! I am just hoping and praying for the LPN program at least. Then I will worry about the bridge next year. I am already working at FHZ so at least I have that for me. And I **LOVE** it there.

I am a God-fearing and believing Christian. I know I have put all my eggs in one basket, but all along, I have felt that this is where God wants me. I can try as hard as I want to do this on my own, and make my own way and secure my own future. But every avenue I pursue seems to dead end. My future, as a nurse or otherwise, was written long ago and there is NOTHING I can do to change it. Need to remember I'm not the Pilot :)

Chris--

I love your positive outlook so much.

HOWEVER...HCC does not have an in-county requirement :) They have a great program.

Pre-reqs

A few more pre-reqs, and the app dates are off (cut off for January was June 1st...weird but whatever).

I believe that with your wonderful attitude, something good is going to happen for you for certain! The end result will be that you are going to be a fabulous nurse.

Nice words of encouragement from scrapworking, too!

Jennifer

Wow! That is crazy! At HCC Spring 2010, the cut off was 3.4 but up to the last minute alternates were at 3.2 and I know a few alternates that got in. I believe there were 500 apps for 135 seats. I heard for Fall 2010, there were 600apps. I think the GPA cutoff was 3.4 or slightly higher. For some reason, it seems that the gpa cut off is higher in the Fall than in the Spring.

I didn't bother applying to SPC or PHCC because I didn't work or live there. I think that is a bit unfair as Tampa doesn't have that restriction but whatever. Good luck to everyone. I'm in nursing school now at HCC and I love it!

3.4??? I'm a shoe-in! ;-) I think I have heard that also, that spring GPA's tend to be just slightly lower than fall. Not sure why that is.
