At the risk of being flamed, when did we decide that everything should be given to us for free? Or that we should never have to suffer? Or wait? Or have less than someone else?

I made a choice to go to college at a state school and take as many classes as possible at a community college to save money. I paid all my own student loans (actually I am still paying). I never expected anyone else to shoulder the burden of MY education.

It's called a loan - you pay it back.

:tku::tku::tku::tku::tku::tku:

I took student loans out to attend a CC and obtain my LPN education. I signed the loan papers and I paid the loans back. I am now in a LPN/BSN bridge program and I saved the money to return to college. I'm hoping to graduate debt free, but if I need to I will take out a student loan and I will pay it back.

When did we, as a society, start to think we are entitled to everything? Something worth having is worth working for?

It's called a loan - you pay it back.

I believe the majority of us get that. Nothing wrong with daydreaming a bit. Geesh, lighten up.

Heck to the NO!!!!!!

I am all for the petition of

"If you CHOOSE to attend a college, you have chosen to pay the bills that entails". The "I don't want to pay higher interest rates because you chose to go into debt and want to bail on paying".

You know in europe, at least in Germany, if you have a good grades you get into college and its paid for....

so, its not totally out of the question to expect an education to be paid for ... but tis life in the US,.and here i am drowing in student loans meh.

So why did you not move to those areas. And pay the tax burden that those nations carry, and live on the pay that they offer.

Another question, why did you choose to "drown yourself" in student loans. You could gave paid as you go, chosen a cheaper school, or worked for several years and saved the money, or chosen a different profession. There are other options to keep from "drowning" yourself

Americans for the last century have encouraged their children to go to college to earn a degree. The children were taught that a college degree will open many financial doors and promote independence. That myth is similar to the current nursing shortage. Here is the thing…people without a college education will not be securing the good jobs in America, period. Those who are earning Bachelor degrees are somewhat competitive, but it is still not a guarantee. So, what is a person to do? Not go to college; thereby not going into debt with student loans? Or go to college and go in debt in hopes that the graduate is competitive enough to secure employment upon graduation? At least those who decide to attend higher education are increasing their odds.

Let’s put this student loan debt into its’ proper perspective. First, it does not matter if the student has 8K in debt versus 88K in debt, if he or she has not secured employment; he/she is unable to make payments. People attend private schools with excellent reputations as a means to stand out from those who attended community colleges and state schools. I am not saying that the idea of wiping out student loan debt is a good idea because quite honestly, rather than spending the extra amount each month, I would sock it into my 401K. I don’t know if any of you know this, but the percentage of us who have high 700 and low 800 credit scores is decreasing. Those who paid their bills on-time and with little debt are still losing their homes and filing for bankruptcy protection. You don’t think banks have noticed this?

I hope those of you who are hell bent on the theory that “I signed the loan and I am going to pay it back” don’t begin to experience financial hardships. Because when the banks call to collect and you tell them you’re not working, they will tell you “you signed the loan documents and you are responsible for paying it.” When this happens, I am sure you will have a completely different perspective.

Pay as you go...okay so someone who is making $10.00/hour can afford to pay an extra $200/month in tuition payments along with books and supplies while trying to pay rent, utilities, and food. Interesting...

Cheaper school...is there such a thing? Sure, a person can attend a community college, which will still cost 3-4K a year. Again, someone making $10.00/hour can't afford to pay that.

Work for several years to save money. Not a bad idea if the person decided to go back to school at the age of 71 because he or she has been saving the $20.00/month to attend school.

A different profession...yes, this is the answer. I think I will become a shift manager at McDonalds and make $12/hr, and live a miserable existence because I was unable to follow my dreams.

Drowning yourself in debt...does it matter if the person's school debt is 8K or 88K if he or she is unable to make payments because he/she is unemployed or underemployed?

This is beyond stupid; it's economic suicide, not a stimulus. Luckily, it will never happen.

People make choices and must pay for them too.

I do agree that it should not be expected to be free. In Australia the Government subsidises a certain amount of uni courses, I'm lucky that I got one of those places so that already takes my cost from $20,000 a year to $5,000 approximately. Then the loan is paid back to the Government at a really low interest rate (can't remember exactly but its low interest, and I just knocked off from a shift so to lazy to look it all up right now). The best part is that we don't start paying the money back until we are earning a minimum yearly wage of approx $32,000. So I don't start paying my loan back (which is $20,000 for 2 degree's over 4yrs) untill I'm in decent paid employment. Maybe you could petition for something like that.

I looked at the site and noticed it was sponsored by MoveOn.org

Go figure.

To all those that complain that school should be free: just look at how much money is wasted on Pell grants that never result in a degree. And even if school was free, there is still the cost of room, board, and books (not to mention transportation, entertainment and clothes).

I'm getting by w/o loans or grants. All of school is being paid for by merit scholarships, room, board, books, fees, tuition, transportation, supplies, and spending money (even got a little extra to buy a computer to replace my aging POS. Not saying everyone can do this, but a little hard work can go a long way.

And forgiveness, ha! You signed that dotted line, you drank the kool-aid.
