You know who would REALLY love this? For-profit colleges.
I'd be in favor of occupational programs that would have debt forgiveness upon completion, but to just wipe it out completely is a bad idea. I know many people are hurting but there are many others who can just pick up a shift now and then and make ends meet just fine even with loan payments.

.....and upon graduation you "volunteer" for a multi year commitment to work in the public sector for little salary.

As much as I would love to have my student loans wiped clean.. I only see further damage in the long run. Yes, on the surface its appealing and promises that monies not used for monthly student loan payments will be dumped in to the economy, but it examining the idea further shows a different reality. Hundreds of millions ( most likely even more) will not be paid to the banks, loan offices, etc.. that use are payments to fund other activities that boosts the economy. I am just not convinced this is the solution, it's nice in theory, but this is not the answer to failing economy. Common sense in spending, funding, policy reform will help, only if everyone decides to stop living above their means and get back to basics. That includes everyone in this nation. I could be wrong though, but I still won't sign. Thanks for sharing though.

I wouldn't mind volunteering for free for many years in lieu of student loan forgiveness. But I wouldn't be willing to give up a regular pay--actually, it would all depend on if the salary cut is worth it.
Are internet petitions legit?

Ate my post because wifemotherstudent said it much better. :)
why thank you.. but your opinion is still valued so share! :)
Don't be fooled, there is actually more than enough money to guarantee K-Phd education for anyone who wants it and has the intelligence to pursue it.
This can be accomplished through the expropriation of the big banks and transfer of the transnational corporations into public enterprises - controlled democratically by workers in an effort to meet the needs of masses - not the profit interests of the few.
I agree with the OP's position that student loan debt should be forgiven but, I don't think signing petitions is going to accomplish anything. Workers, students and the poor need to look beyond the confines of government and pursue their own interests, independent of the two parties of big business (the Democrats and the Republicans).
:) wifemotherstudent, thanks, I'll pass for now though, I didn't save it.
It started something like...
Forgiving the student loan debt of all Americans would have immediate and long term depressing effects on our economy. Millions of Americans would be unable to get private loans, as lenders quickly realize "loan" had come to mean "gift." Not only would many people have postpone the posibility of a profession job and the associated increased earnings but all lending would be affected. If they can mandate that breach of contract, they can mandate breaching others... at the very least, interests rates would go up to reflect the increased risk involved.
Perhaps a better compromise would be to lower interest rates to a fixed 2-3%. My husband's loans are at 3% and mine are 6.5%
And I would not mind volunteering if it meant I would not drown in debt. Someone said something about picking up an extra shift...but too many don't even have a job.
