i'm not sure if this is an inappropriate question, if it is please ignore it and me :uhoh21: ...but how much can starting rn's expect to make? range wise.

thanks!

At my hospital we start out at 20.60/hour. BUT! Since nurses are in such high demand here, we give incentives to work extra.

Premium pay - 4.00 an hour more on the weekday

8.00 an hour more on the weekends/holidays

Incentive pay - 35.00/hour for units that are chronically short staffed (mine)

Afternoons - 1.00/hour more

Nights - 2.00/hour more

We pay double time on holidays. So lets say for example, you are a new grad and decided to pick up 3-11 for me on Labor day. You would get

35.00 Incentive pay

+35.00 Double time

+ 8.00 Premium Pay

+ 1.00 Afternoon Shift Pay

79.00/hour!!!!

not too shabby, if you ask me:wink2:

Wow! That's awesome! Where do you live, Shay?

(Maybe if everyone would put the state where they live as the title of their message it would help...just a suggestion.) :wink2:

i've been wondering the same thing. i'm in my second semester of clinicals in an adn program and will be graduating next december. i live in louisiana, but i would love to move back to california (lived there for 5 years). been checking on apartment prices, though, and it's outrageous--$1200 to $1500 for a 2 bedroom. i'd like to know if i would make enough money to pay that high rent and still have money left over for other things, including a savings account!

any input would be appreciated.

btw - i think rns start out around $18/hr. here.

i believe you would make enough money in california to pay rent, plus do other things. there is a thread started by someone titled, 'how in the world do you make it in california!?' on this thread, many people replied and i specifically remember someone saying she makes enough money to pay rent, own a brand new car, and has lots of money left over. someone else also mentioned something to the effect of making enough money to pay rent, but home buying would be a different story. check out that thread. if you can, take a vacation there just to check things out. good luck.

that's a great idea! i can't believe how different the scales range.

are their some departments that always pay more than others?

i live in michigan and i have seen the starting pay range between 19.28hr -23.00 plus shift diff which is between 1.00-2.50 and weekends are .29 to 2.50 per hour. my hospital is only 136 beds but they pay double time and a half for holidays etc.

New grads start at $19 or $20 an hour depending on the hospital, plus $2.50/hr for weekday 7p-11p, $5.00 for weekday 11p-7a, $11 for weekend 7a-7p & $14 for weekend 7p-7a.

I'm in NC, and our base pay is pretty bad, compared to the rest of the country, but it goes something like this with incentives:

base: $18.54

night premium: $4.00

weekend premium: $4.50

OT pay: time and a half

critically short-staffed unit (ours): $10.00

holidays: time and a half

picking up an OT shift by signing up for it on the schedule (vs. being asked to pick it up later): $25.00 gift certificate to a pretty good restaurant

So, if I decided to sign up for an extra shift on a saturday night, I'd get:

$18.54+

$9.27+

$4.00+

$4.50+

$10.00+

dinner =

$46.31 an hour! two and a half times more than base pay!

we're offered day/night rotation with 2 weekend shifts every two weeks as new grads, but after our 12 week orientation, we're allowed to work more nights/weekends than required, and the option of going straight nights is encouraged, since the longer your tenure on the unit, the fewer nights/weekends you have to work.

for me, nights are a lot better, as my fiancee is in japan, so my nights are his days. and i'm an absolute night person.
