What is your advice on 3 night 4 day disney trip with band and chorus HS age? Chaperoning and nursing suggestions please. TIA
I have had some exceptional trips!!!! 2 foreign exchanges, Costa Rica and France, Disney for grad nite, DC for a band trip , whitewater rafting. I hold the meds that can be misused-stimulants, pain meds, psych meds etc I always have stock stuff.
One year while checking the bags I found a bottle of 50 Vicodin and the kid could not understand why I needed to hold it So there I was in NYC where there are cameras EVERYWHERE doling out his pain meds......I'm on video somewhere, I just know it!!!!!!!!!!
I went to Grad Nite at Disney when I was in high school!!
I went to Washington DC, Baltimore, Anapolis, and NYC with a big group of 8th graders a few years ago. I went to Montreal with 7th and 8th graders as a chaperone 2 years ago- didn't even wave my nurse flag there, what with going to a different country and all. I'm doing the same Montreal trip this year in May (different kid this time). I love it and I agree it's lots of fun, but exhausting!!
A few years ago I had a teacher who had a relationship with a local organization... well she personally holds a weekend overnighter for her class at this organization. It is not a school sponsored activity. What a nightmare. When I asked her how she does meds and such she said parents just give her the bottles and tell her what time to give them, she didn't have a problem with that. However, that particular year she had a diabetic student. She was not willing to learn diabetes care and the family could not accompany him. The district was willing to pay me to go but I had a prior commitment. So, the district told her she had to cancel the trip if the diabetic could not be included. She flew off the handle because it was not a "school sponsored" activity and was something she paid for out of her own pocket. She ended up trying to bribe me to go! Get this- she offered me a whole whopping $30 for an overnight trip!!!! HAHA! I told her the going rate for a nurse is more like $30/hr. She told me to forget it. I mean, I pay babysitters more than $30! The kid ended up finding a family member to go with in the end, but still.
I did Grad Night at Disneyland and I actually loved it. I wasn't used that much and spent a lot of time having fun. My only annoyance was Disney staff constantly mistaking me for a student although I had on a Staff Member wristband.
Also, the Nurses at Disney, had to make a trip to the First Aid Office, weren't very friendly. They totally killed my dream to be a Disneyland Nurse.

Indeed.
We have 5 teachers taking 60 12th graders to Barcelona and Spain this year (actually every year). I talk meds with them, but Europe is out of my scope! Most of the kids are 18 by the time they travel. We have med forms and require original prescription bottles with one teacher taking charge of checking in with those students. I do make two very large first aid kits for the teachers to take with them.
And to those wondering. Nope, not going. Ever.
