OMG Say it correctly!

Nurses Relations

There is just somethings that really bother me, specifically mispronunciation of words. The specific abbreviation that realllllly grinds my gears is when a nurse or CNA/PCT says " O2 STATS" O2 "stat"uration?

Anyone have anything else that people misspell or mispronounce that gets them going??

I had no idea there was any way to say "rales" other than "rails." I have never heard anyone say it any other way - I probably would have given anyone who pronounced it differently a really funny look. "Rails" is correct pronunciation where I'm from - heard it like that from MDs, instructors, coworkers, everyone.

In nursing school I hear it pronounced rawls. In medic I've always heard it pronounced rails. Same school btw lol.

not gonna go look back, but had another pt with a " prostrate problem" lol

My mother recently started using text messaging. When I text her a message telling her something my boys have done that is new or interesting, she responds "that's alsome". - meaning awesome. It has happened multiple times so I know it isn't due to autocorrect.

Not sure why this one bugs me so much, but I wince at "chloro-hexidine" for chlorhexidine.

My A&P instructor would say "pharnyx" and "larnyx" instead of pharynx and larynx. Drove me bananas!

My pharm instructor would say "ibufren" instead of ibuprofen. We were all frantically looking for this drug until someone figured it out.

Working in a retail pharmacy brought lots of, uh, INTERESTING pronunciations. Can't remember most of them now though.

That's how I pronounce it... and I was a NICU nurse for many years.

Were people laughing and scoffing at me that whole time and I didn't know it??

I have always said it "umBILicus." However, I recently witnessed an ER attending ask a resident if he was a "umBILicus or umbiLIKEus guy." So, it can be pronounced either way. (For the record, I personally think umbiLIKEus sounds a bit awkward.)

Hmmmm

I am not easily bothered. Mispronouncing words does not phase me. As it is something everyone does at some point in time. It may be due to the fact I am from the south and our accents always tend to cause issues with pronunciation.

I almost wanted to make deliberate errors to annoy those that are easily riled, I decided not to be petty though.

What is the right pronunciation of Yankauer?

Is it Yank,as in yank-au-er? Is the au pronounced like it is in "audition"?

Is it prononuced "our"?

Another one I don't understand....mellitus,as in Diabetes Mellitus.

Is it Mell-i-tus,with a short "I" sound?

My professor used to say it that way.

Or is it pronounced like "Me-light-us?

Everyone I know uses it like this, even my phone app.

yang´kow-er, that is the Wiki way. I was taught basically that, minus the "g".
