OMG Say it correctly!

Nurses Relations

Published

There is just somethings that really bother me, specifically mispronunciation of words. The specific abbreviation that realllllly grinds my gears is when a nurse or CNA/PCT says " O2 STATS" O2 "stat"uration?

Anyone have anything else that people misspell or mispronounce that gets them going??

hmmmm....I pronounce those words the same. How do you pronounce them?

It's not a pronunciation issue, but it bugs me when medical personnel write patient's when they actually mean patients (plural).

@nikkih901 Nikki, I unfortunately can't private message you yet, but I have been reading your posts on here for a long time. I was accepted in the program at Southwest TN CC and at Northwest MS CC. I don't know which program to go with. Southwest is closer to my house, but the Northwest building is so nice and the people were much more friendly there than what I ran in to at the Union Campus. I couldn't find anywhere to park nor the right buildings to go in to. I felt a bit like when I'd ask people around campus the one day I was there anything they seemed annoyed. Did you enjoy southwest or do you recommend a different program?

Ever use a "hoya lift" to transfer a patient? Apparently some of my coworkers use them all the time.

Dilate.

Instead of pronouncing it die-layte

I hear people often say "dial-ate"

" I need my Dilauda".... I don't don't know why so many patients assume the the d at the end is silent?

I had one patient who always said "didaudid". For months after my coworker and I said it that way (to each other) for fun.

This isn't really mispronunciation, but I get really twitchy any time someone texts me "thx" instead of "thanks".

If you can't find it in you to type 3 more measly letters, it makes me think you weren't really that thankful!

Ok, I feel better. Thx for letting me vent!

In nursing school we had an instructor who said "umbiLIKEus".[/quote']

That's how I pronounce it... and I was a NICU nurse for many years.

Were people laughing and scoffing at me that whole time and I didn't know it??

Come to think of it, I never pronounced it umbiLIKEal cord. Go figure...
