There is just somethings that really bother me, specifically mispronunciation of words. The specific abbreviation that realllllly grinds my gears is when a nurse or CNA/PCT says " O2 STATS" O2 "stat"uration?
Anyone have anything else that people misspell or mispronounce that gets them going??
As the resident dialysis nurse, mine is people who say BUN like a hamburger BUN.....omg please say B.U.N. most of the other things don't bother me that much....oh wait this one, and maybe you have to be in dialysis to get this, but if a tech reports a "high arterial pressure" I tell them hmmmm....okay that's good then....but I know they mean low art alarms bc it's a negative number and it becomes MORE negative meaning it's a LOW pressure. But I digress..... :) and one tech consistently reports high resistance on a catheter lumen when he means "not getting a good pull"....resistance, to me, means "difficult to push", not pull. Maybe I should post this in the renal specialty forum...haha :) good thread!
My boss insists on pronouncing "mediastinoscopy" as "medianstinoscopy". The surgeons love to give her (and anyone else who adds that extra n) a hard time.
I hate when people pronounce acronyms in general, but "mersa" is one of my main pet peeves!
I just have to ask- do you say or spell out scuba and radar? They're acronyms too. The whole point of acronyms is to shorten a phrase. Doesn't pronouncing it as a word make it even shorter?
Around these parts, we have folks who like to put an "s" after any type of store name. We go to "Kmart's", "Walmart's" and "Target's". Note: I placed a possessive "s" at the end of these names because I can only assume people who do this are
Yeah... about that. I think you're being kind with that assumption. My annoyance with people who go to Walmarts is superseded only by my annoyance with people who go to THE Walmart. As in, "We carried mama up to THE Walmart today..."
So, did you visit several Walmarts today, or does your city/town/rural locale only have ONE Walmart? AKA THE Walmart. Please disambiguate for me. Because either way, I'M NOW IRRITATED.
j/k I don't have time to be that constantly annoyed!
It's back! The Precordial Thump | Heart Center TrainingThe Precordial Thump
It's old school. It looks cool. Its rarely done. It's back. The precordial thump is now back in the 2010 ACLS guidelines.
2010 (New): The precordial thump should not be used for unwitnessed out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. The precordial thump may be considered for patients with witnessed, monitored, unstable VT (including pulseless VT) if a defibrillator is not immediately ready for use, but it should not delay CPR and shock delivery.
YESSSS!!!

I read that, after a pt was intubated, "end title CO2 monitoring" was started.
