Oklahoma Hospital Shooting

What is happening to our society?

Oklahoma Hospital Shooting-BBC

Aside from the predictable debate about gun availability in the United States, what is spurring these bloody tragedies that are becoming more and more frequent?

In this case I wonder if the war on opiates was a contributing factor? This man had back surgery that 10 years ago would have earned him a generous prescription of opiates. Now you're having more and more frustration with patients who have chronic pain.

Generally, society has become more driven by the internet, leading to attention-craving behaviors. A lot of social structures have broken down. Young people have grown up with violent video games, and now have access to real, heavy duty weapons. Americans have become more and more entitled, rude, and spoiled. Those are just some of the things that cross my mind regarding this subject.

Actually, in several studies looking at mass shootings over the past 50 years, almost every single shooter (particularly teen/young adult shooters) gave advance warning of their plans.

Really? How interesting. I'll have to Google that. The public needs more education on being alert to this!

Yes so true!  It really takes a village.  They've seen a lot of incidences where the shooter has posted on social media or told a close friend or several friends.  I guess the problem comes when trying to figure out if someone is just being a poser or if they actually have intent.  In either case I think it is worth being reported.

It’s discussed in a recently published book called “The Violence Project”

Is posting plans of violence illegal? I know facebook doesn't tolerate any hint about violence.

I think a public service campaign might be in order. It could start educating the public just like they did during the terrorism scares in the early 2000s. They told us to be on the lookout for strange packages or people making threats.

Nah, not illegal, but it should trigger mental health professionals to assist the person in finding healthier outlets for the frustrations and stresses of living in this society. That care should be tax payer funded and readily available.

And we don't know about the ones that were aborted by police.

There is never enough training for us to prepare for any event especially one of this nature. One of the veteran nurses should design a protocol system that actually makes sense because sadly the people that come up with these codes are not the ones working on the floor or even aware of what it would be like in an instance where something like this magnitude occurred. Someone please make sense of a real code exit plan strategy to save lives during any event like these as of now our facilities plan to exit is a joke! Who comes up with these silly ideas like to push a button on a wall in excuse me when security won’t restrain won’t get involved why they are there is another question altogether Working at one of the most violent communities in Los Angeles we are labeled killer king hospital so many people die in the ER it’s pathetic that something bad like this happens but still nothing not a single conversation about a plan in motion to save us in any event

That's not true.  We've been talking about gun control for decades.

?That was a very good article. It ended so abruptly, I wanted to read more.

Tying Medicare reimbursment to patient satisfaction scores had a major hand in this too.
