Ok, RANDOM question. What do you think of anne geddes pictures?

Published

Hello,

This is random but I was looking at anne geddes calenders online. Anyway, I do think her pictures are visually nice but was surprised to see that some people find it cruel for the babies. One person wrote how the babies are put in unusual positions, but isn't the fetal position comfortable for them? anyway, what are your thoughts? t.

I very much dislike them. Not that I have any reason to beleive that the babies are mistreated, but I don't like to see them used as objects. I also saw one picture of a premie in a man's hand that looked about 2lb. In all seriousness that baby was mcuh too small to be out of an isolette (or dead already). I have disliked those picturse ever since.

A little extreme? For all you know, the pic could have been taken in an isolette, photography can make that happen, you know.

In two words?......wierd looking.

They remind me of burritos all wrapped up like that.

Celine Dion IS annoying. And I don't like that "oversinging" style of singing.

So, I'm with ya on this one.

And I still think you made a good point with your "Media for pregnant people" statement.

I'm Canadian and I find Celine Dion annoying too. Ever see her in an interview?

:imbar :imbar

Great voice though.

Cruel? Nah. Exploitive? Maybe.

But I do agree with Mermom that it does make preemies look like cute little dolls, thereby downplaying the enormity of having a premature child.

I like them in general, although a lot of them are downright daft.....the flower type ones particularly. We also have them up in our unit, in fact in all four units I have worked in.

Her work just doesn't do it for me.....

I like some of her work, we have had her pics up in our nursery, too.

On the other hand, I go through her calendar every year, to see if I can stand seeing the photos for a whole month. I decided "no" on the Celine Dion one. The red body stocking was weird........it wasn't the only one.

LOL....Hilarious.

Interestingly we just touched on this subject on my preemie parenting bb while discussing the frustration over the misconception of what preemies actually are. While I enjoy some of her work, we were discussing how this type of "glorification" can propagate and perpetuate the gross misconception that preemies are just cute little babies, and the desire among unsuspecting women to have one.

That reminds me of the Cabbage Patch Kids' Preemies (circa 1985). I had one, who was bald, with a binkie!! She was sooo cute, and smaller than the regular dolls. I was 11, so had no idea what a preemie was, other than being born early.

Those pictures kind of creep me out too.

I wish more of our parents would treat their babies as lovingly, instead of shooting heroin for 9 months, then decorating their cribs with rosaries and pictures of Jesus.

I can't stop laughing at that!! I'm in peds, and see a lot of NICU 'stepdown' babies in LTC. Only a nurse can appreciate that

(And since Jesus is watching over the baby, they don't have to???)

I work in a Catholic hospital, and can't tell you how often I hear "birth control is against our religion". But premarital sex, and shooting heroin are OK? Hmmm...it gets very frustrating!!!!!

Had to laugh at the names you mentioned--we must work in the same NICU--LOL!!

And the name on the crib card is "Destiny" "Miracle" "Precious" or "Heavenly" right? Also a full code, "do everything" kind of baby? Grrrrr...you're right. I see too many parents who treat their babies like crap in utero and then expect us to work miracles afterwards.

Babies are something to be treasured, to be adored, to be marveled at! That's why I like her pictures - she puts babies into the spotlight as the beautiful creatures that they are.

The preemie picture in question...in one of her books, there was information in the back talking about taking that photograph. It was a gentle older man with beautiful, hardworking hands, and a healthy, stable preemie. The picture was taken in the NICU, probably a few feet from the isolette. Heck, we've send kids HOME recently who are that about that size!!!

The pictures I can do without are the ones where the women wear these body stockings and they drop the baby inside to look like she's pregnant and we can "see" the baby inside of her. Those kind of rub me the wrong way.
