Hello my fellow nursing students. I will be starting my nursing classes on July 6. That's only 12 days from now! I'm both excited and nervous. We had our first orientation yesterday, well it was more like a meet and greet. I have been on YouTube all day looking at videos on nursing school supplies. So I will be starting my school shopping this week. When did you get your school supply list? I was hoping to get mine at orientation, but nope no list! I hope that we can keep each other encouraged through the process. Congratulations to everyone who got accepted into the program.
Hey everyone!
It's been a while since I posted. Just to refresh your memory. I will be starting 15/16 month BSN program August 24th and I just had my orientation yesterday! The program is composed of traditional students who finish in 3 years and accelerated students who finish in 15/16 months.
I was able to met some students, but there about 70 students! So I couldn't meet everyone. I met some of the professors who made it to the orientation and we all have a faculty advisor. They also talked about clinicals. Since I am an accelerated student I start clinicals probably around the 2nd or 3rd week of classes (they still haven't posted information). Next Friday, we're already diving in to learning nursing skills so I have to wear my uniform and bring my stethoscope and blood pressure cuff. I still haven't purchased the blood pressure cuff because they just told us about it yesterday. I have to bring next Friday!
They posted our books yesterday, so I am spending around $600-$700 on books. I purchased them all on Amazon because the university bookstore is crazy expensive! Hopefully they get here by Sunday, like it says it will.
For some classes, I have to read about 6 chapters by the first day. So you can imagine how nervous I feel, but I am still pretty excited! I'll post again either after my first day of classes or after the first week of classes. I'm very excited to hear from the rest of you about your first day/week. Good luck!
For those of us that start on the 31st #10moredays! Meanwhile I'm starting to read the combined 160 pages that I need to read before class starts!
I'm slightly annoyed that our class manual won't be available before class starts. It's only available online and and it's at the minimum 50 pages, but it has all our reading assignments etc and I know for sure it's something I want printed.
T-minus 10 days for me! First day is orientation, second day ATI testing. I'm curious about the ATI testing throughout the program and how I'll do with it. I did fairly well on the TEAS so at least I know I can think like the testing likes. However, I've heard that ATI prepares you differently for the NCLEX, a little contradictory. We'll see how it goes! I'm ready to have my nose in the books for the next two years.
Cheers to 2017!
I start nursing classes on Wednesday, the 26th, and feel somewhere between crazy nervous and crazy excited! Also, when it comes to my books, I'm not sure how I feel... you guys let me know what you think... I bought my nursing "books" yesterday. It is a special package they said that you HAVE to buy through the bookstore... I'm using financial aid money, so that didn't bother me. I went yesterday to pick up what I needed and the bookstore clerk hands me what looks like a DVD box and says, ok, thats $900. ??? I called the nursing department, and they confirmed this is all I was looking for/ needed... Apparently, my school uses online database, and this tiny box I just bought is the access codes for this data base. Literally not one physical book!?!?! $900 is less than some other people have posted on here, and I'm glad that I'll only have to lug my laptop around, and not a million 1,000 pound books, but DANG! $900 for a code! And I had planned on keeping my books, due to me being a highlighting queen! I guess I could print out everything I want and do it that way, but.... What are all of your thoughts?? I'm I over-reacting???
That is a lot of money. My nursing book package costs $500. It contained 10 books and we will use all of them throughout the entire program; it also came with access codes so we could download the books to our computers (highlighting and note-taking features are available on the e-books, as well as teaching videos and adaptive quizzing). I was willing to pay $500 for all of that, but $900 for just the codes?!
I've heard of other places doing this, but I think I still would have beenabout it. I prefer having the actual book as I think that's easier for me. When it comes to ebooks, I have a tendency to feel more overwhelmed by it (not really sure why). How long do the access codes work?
I agree with the previous poster about either renting them or possibly buying them used if it would be helpful. I think ebooks can be nice as you can take it wherever you want without having to lug it around (like if you're waiting at the doctors or something), but I also like having the actual copy as well.
Some people really do feel overwhelmed by e-books, and I think it has a lot to do with distraction. Students are more tempted to go to other sites instead of staying on the book page. I don't think a program should provide only e-books.

Oh man, I wish we had anything available to us before orientation (on the 31st as well)! I keep checking our online platform, alas... nothing. We got some material that says the syllabus will be distributed at orientation. Wish I had at least a little to go on! Good luck!!!
Also starting in ten days!! :-} Our school put on a "Nursing Boot Camp" for us yesterday....what a blessing!! They went over so much, it really put our minds at ease, for the most part! (Except where they said "Kiss your family goodbye and tell them you'll see them at Christmas!" LOLOLOL =D ) Good luck to all!!

My shoes have to be white too. Ugh. Ill probably hold off buying them for another 2 weeks since we dont have clinicals that require uniform until 2nd week of class.I just got my books today. Im so broke and my husband is having surgery next month so i had to buy books using my excess financial aid through the bookstore. OUCH. I spend about $1300 just in nursing stuff. So pissed. But i do have all except one book for the entire program.
Looks like we are using a lot of the same books.
