Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.
I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.
As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.
As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.
. . .Here is what my class required:
Holistic Health Intervention Strategies Paper
Comprehensive Health History: The student will complete a comprehensive health history for a client from a holistic, contextual perspective. This health history will include biographical data, reason for seeking care, present health or history of present illness, past health, family history (including genogram), cultural history, functional history, nutritional history, developmental history, and review of systems. You will utilize the forms found in the Jarvis student laboratory manual.
Case Studies and Narrative Summaries:
Quizzes: You will complete three electronic quizzes during the course worth 15 points each. Each quiz contains 30 items and you have 45 minutes to complete the quiz.
Participation Points: This is an interactive course, and as such, students are expected to participate in all activities.
This seems like what should be required for an online health assessment class at the BSN level. However, my instructor was different, so that may also be the case as to why the curriculum is different.
This is totally reasonable. I wouldn't even object to performing a live or videotaped complete head-to-toe assessment if OU made provisions for students to do it (e. g., through your local community college's nursing lab). Beyond that gets into unreasonable territory IMO.
Can someone repost the POST about the semester change and the link to keep checking in for updates! Thanks
Here's some excepts from a couple of e-mails on the subject that OU sent out:
Dear Students,
Many of you have already noticed the item recently added to your “To Do” list in your MyOhio page concerning the TDCP. As you are likely well aware, Ohio University will be transitioning from quarters to semesters, effective next fall quarter 2012. Beginning later this month (Oct. 17th), the College of Health Sciences and Professions will begin the Q2S advising process. In a nutshell, each undergraduate student who has started an academic program under the quarter system and who will be finishing under semesters will be required to work with an advisor to complete a Transitional Degree Completion Plan (TDCP). This plan will be the roadmap for transitional students so they will know exactly how to schedule for future academic terms and how they can finish their degrees on schedule.
In the upcoming weeks, watch your email closely for updates from your advisor, your school/department office, and from our Student Services office. As the university makes all the necessary resources available, we will begin the advising process no earlier than October 17th. Our office is finalizing documents for the Q2S advising process and we anticipate they will be available online by early next week…we will contact you with links so you can access these tools. In addition to documents specific to your major, there should be tentative course offerings through 2015 which will project when courses will be available. The best thing you can do right now is to keep checking the Q2S web site for updates as new information is being added as it becomes available: http://www.ohio.edu/q2s/departments/college_list.cfm
. . . You also may want to flip through the Q2S online brochure.
You also may send questions directly to [email protected]. . .
haha what a trooper!!! this class makes me want to quit! are you going to video tape it?
i plan to video tape it, unless i can get a dialysis np say she is an expert in assessment. i think video is best. there is only one class left open, xxxxxx is the instructor, so no luck switching. no sense stressing about it anymore! we will be just fine, we may be bald and absolutely nuts but we will be fine.
