Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

Mtsteel...Don't quote me on days, but I remember needing to take test by Wed. Think I took mine on Tues. Passed with 75. Was stressing because I'm

A retentive and couldn't stomach a C. But I saw the class load for stats and really started to freak. My husband told me to keep it moving and just take stats. Felt like sometime on Tues or Wed morning received an email saying 5 points were added to test. So I gladly took my 80. What's crazy is if that were done now, I wouldn't have a b- passing grade.

Cool...I got your message. Thanks so much.

Steph...I agree a total waste. But can

Be an easy A if done right.

is information now posted about the test out option? yes, as soon as you hit submit, your grade pops up. but don't "stress" as they might do a "slight" curve. for my exam they added 5 points.

deltaroxxy2, did you have to do an absolutely insane assessment? if so how did you do it? it looks like we have 3 options: videotape it, have a nurse practitioner watch us, or go to the college in athens and do it in their lab with one of their instructors. we need to decide by week 3. i have no idea how to use an opthalmascope. :uhoh3:

I'll have to look when I get home. I don't remember seeing anything like that, but I didn't pay close attention to the class assignments in this class once I tested out. But I'm almost positive we didn't have that. I work with a lot of NPs so that option would be my best bet.

Oh you would probably remember. The directions said we have to have our "patient" sign a consent and mail it to our instructor, and we have 75 minutes to do a full assessment using an opthalmascope, otoscope, tuning fork, and reflex hammer. If we don't have access to practice with these items, we should purchase them. I don't know if it is just my instructor or all of the NSG 310 Assessment instructors requiring this. I don't think these skills are within a BSN scope of practice, I thought a NP did this stuff, but im not really sure.

Just checked. This is ALL NEW!!!

This is worrisome, not because of the challenge per se but because of the logistics involved.

If this kind of assessment really is required, it will present a huge problem for folks like me who do not work in hospitals. It will be very difficult, if not impossible to get this kind of exercise set up without access to hospital or clinical facilities. I also think that requiring students who do not have access to the instruments required to purchase them - which will not be inexpensive - is unreasonable.

May I ask which specific section(s) of 310 are this applied to? It would seem prudent to register for a section that didn't require the exercise.

Chuckster...I totally agree. I am wondering if this a new curriculum requirement b/c my class didn't require this.

Here is what my class required:

Holistic Health Intervention Strategies Paper

Comprehensive Health History: The student will complete a comprehensive health history for a client from a holistic, contextual perspective. This health history will include biographical data, reason for seeking care, present health or history of present illness, past health, family history (including genogram), cultural history, functional history, nutritional history, developmental history, and review of systems. You will utilize the forms found in the Jarvis student laboratory manual.

Case Studies and Narrative Summaries:

Quizzes: You will complete three electronic quizzes during the course worth 15 points each. Each quiz contains 30 items and you have 45 minutes to complete the quiz.

Participation Points: This is an interactive course, and as such, students are expected to participate in all activities.

This seems like what should be required for an online health assessment class at the BSN level. However, my instructor was different, so that may also be the case as to why the curriculum is different.

i just read the summary from the syllabus and the paragraph on doin the health history does not mention pruchasing these items or even give that much detail....unless i'm looking in a different place than you. this is definitely worrisome. i think it goes beyond our scope of practice...and to have us do it week one????crazy...

Deltaroxxy my syllabus says the same thing.......

Specializes in Correctional Nursing; MSN student.

Well, I'm gonna study like a son-of-a-gun and TRY to test out of this! I'm in section 4-4-106, moderator edit of name. This is an advanced head to toe assessment. I don't know where they draw the line on the exam...haven't looked at the assessment sheet yet. But, a full exam includes genitalia...NOT! This will NOT fly in my area of practice...corrections. This type of exam is reserved for the NPs in our practice. The challenge today is studying this huge area of information. Arggghhhhhh....

Glad we have this forum

Then you must have moderator edit of name for the instructor…Correct??? I didn't have her either, but it seems like moderator edit of name is the one requiring the detailed assessment.
