Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

What about taking 310 and 325 together? Anyone? That would Health Appraisal and Health Interventions. I'm trying to figure out the time frame for completion if I double up vs one at a time...plus I have to take a cultural diversity course. Does it shave off much time? Anyone with input?

I started in Jan 11. When started, I needed the 12 required nursing classes plus statistics, ART, junior english, and nutrition. I took Transitions and Cultural diversity solo b/c I wanted to see how difficult the classes. After taking cultural diversity, I decided that the next term I would double up.

So I mapped out this plan and have been sticking to it:

Transitions

Cultural Diversity

Statistics and Health Assessment (tested out)

Family Nursing and Legal/Ethical Nursing

Nurse Research and Music (If you need an ART class, TAKE THE 5wk MUSIC CLASS offered by Bryant)

Management Issues and Community

Strategic Planning and Junior English

Health Interventions and Junior English (Fall 2)

Nutrition (Winter 1)

Gerontology and Nutrition (Winter 2)

Nursing Excellence (Spr 1) 3/26-4/28/12

Program would have taken me less than 15m to complete. It's only a few months longer if you don't double up and only need the RN classes.

Per this: http://www.outreach.ohio.edu/bsn/documents/syllabus_nrse325.pdf I taking Appraisal and Intervention will be good to take together.

Thanks for that great input. I was looking at the registration time frames and apparently 9/20 was the last day to add a class??? That doesn't seem right. Any idea if I can add? I wasn't able to do it but it seems if there's space available you could add a class at this point in time. Feedback? Thanks.

@ mtsteelhorse if the class is fall II starting 10/17 you can register until 10/10. For some reason OU called to tell my this bit of info today. I thought it was funny because I have 12 credits this quarter and I have taken the classess they are offering except 455 and I can't take it yet. HTH

Thanks for that info. I tried to register and it won't let me. I must be doing something wrong. Thanks again. Good luck with finishing up! Do you work while taking that load?

If all else fails, pick up the phone and call the school. One of the advisors can register you.

This is the first time I've taken so many at once. Stategic planning & culteral diversity both 5 weeks classes. and family nsg 10 week class. I do work fulltime. I waited until last minute to register so I took what was left. I just have 3 nsg classes left and jc comp and microboiology. Trying to finish before Summer. I want to take the summer off and then start NP in the Fall.

Wow! You are busy!!! I can't bring myself to take more than one class at a time. My ahem a-retentiveness ahem gets in the way!! Plus I am trying to finish my ME-SAFE certification and teach ENPC - and I am on the nurse practice council at work ... have enough going on :D

rninme, what is ME-SAFE? I'm going to try two classes but we'll see...I don't know how people juggle so many things. I get hung up on papers...like they're never good enough to submit. Then I get frustrated and hit "submit." I hope I can balance two classes at a time. The key is organization I guess. I'll give it a whirl. You sound plenty busy!

ME-SAFE is state of Maine certification as a Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner. SANE is the term you usually hear - but that is a trademarked name. SANE certification is a national test endorsed by the International Association of Forensic Nurses - which is great organization by the way.

I don't think I could juggle anything else at the moment - and I am really hoping I get an acceptable (for me that is) grade so I can test out of health appraisal. I have at least opened the book :D, havent done much studying - been working on this last paper and STRESSING

My friend does SANE and loves it. Good luck on the assessment test. There really isn't must stress since if you don't like your test grade, you can always take the class.

rninme is that the course you've enrolled in for next session? I signed up for 310 and 325. I'm soooooo hoping I can test out of assessment but if not at least I've reviewed! I am familiar with SANE. Good for you for getting your certification!
