Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

How long ago did you take these courses? I took my Micro course nearly 6 years ago. Figured this wouldn't be that big of a deal for people who are already RNs

thank you rninme, chuckster, and deltaroxxy for the advice and the hugs!!! I need to retake micro b/c of the "D" grade and it was too long ago for them to accept. I did not have chemistry either. I have to say it makes me nervous knowing YOU guys are nervous about something!! lol. I will put on my big girl pants and begin eating away at that elephant......all 22-24 pieces of it. :sstrs: .

Say aren't there only 8 class I can take in one year in this program?? I thought there were 8 "start dates".......

I took it in 1987! So much for them "taking everything possible no matter how long ago"....according to their recruiter..

They accepted my physics class from 1986 ... but it isn't one of the required classes, maybe that is the difference?

I think is has more to do with accepting a failing grade as opposed to a passing one. ugh!

To anybody that tested out of health assessment....should I just try and read the entire text book?!?!

ABSOLUTELY NOT!! You will go into serious overload.

Here is what I suggest.

Get ANY assessment nursing book. I used the one assigned for the class, but you seriously can use anyone of them.

Start at the head and work all the way down to the lower extremities. Look at the CD that comes w/the assessment book.

Ex. How do you examine ears and eyes. What does brittle hair say about the patient. What does green mucous coming from the nose indicate?

Check out http://www.quizlet.com and take EVERY QUIZ possible that you can find regarding assessment. Also focus on a pt. population that you aren't really that familiar with.

Here is an sample quiz:

Dedicate all next week when we are done w/our current classes to study. I'd say do a 1 area of the body a day. You have 2hrs to take 100 questions, and you will seriously use every bit of it. Or at least I did.

Good Luck!!!

> When i submitted my app for this program i had not taken nclex and i made that known on my application. i have been accepted to start (the fall program in 2weeks) and i still have not taken nclex. my date is 2 days before the actual start date of the program, oct 15. Im advised to register by oct12. Does anyone know when they are going to seek out a license number??should i register and just drop if i dont pass (100% money back during first few days of class start).

sincerely, anxious and confused student.

thanks!

I would contact the School of Nursing directly. If you need to wait it will only delay you 5 weeks. I would be upfront about the dates and see what they suggest. Good luck on the NCLEX! I hope you can get started at OU soon.

thanks... i hope so too. because i would actually have to wait until jan2012 to start again. from my understanding, since i am brand new. we'll see. thanks

Thank you deltaroxxy2! That is a great website for quizzes! I need to review the material big time. Is that site somewhat representative of what to expect for the assessment test? I'm debating signing up for 2 courses. Thanks again!

I think so...You really need to take anything that will jog your memory. You can't "read" enough to prepare you for this test. So I would skim the book. Take notes on areas you aren't aren't familiar with, and do a ton of test/quizzes.

I like taking 2 classes. It works for me and my schedule. However, I enrolled in assessment w/statics, and was BEYOND thankful that I didn't have to take those 2 classes together.

What about taking 310 and 325 together? Anyone? That would Health Appraisal and Health Interventions. I'm trying to figure out the time frame for completion if I double up vs one at a time...plus I have to take a cultural diversity course. Does it shave off much time? Anyone with input?
