OBLC ht/wt/body fat% questions

If you show up to OBLC over the ht/wt and tape will they let you stay for the course and be re-evaluated at the end? I am about 22 lbs over my max wt, but only 2 or 3% over the body ft requirement. I can pass the apft easy and I report in 4 weeks (July 14th). I may be able to meet the body fat requirement by then, but need to know what to expect if I don't?

On the reserve side they will send you home. That is at least how it was back in 04, could have changed since then. Can not answer about Active.

According to the paperwork we rec'd they state "It is important that you arrive prepared for both the physicaly demanding field training exercises and the Diagnostic Army Physical Fitness Test (DAPFT) you are required to take to graduate this course". "Students will not be enrolled in OBLC if they have a medical or physical condition or a valid physical profile that precludes participation in the field training exercises or the DAPFT. Students that arrive and cannot meet the minimum physical requirements for the course may be disenrolled from the course, recycled to the next scheduled course after they are able to meet the minimum physical requirements or recommended for separation from the Army".

According to the schedule for June they do Ht/WT the 1st full day of OBLC and the DAPFT on the 2nd.

Might I suggest CrossFit..... get you fit quick and you'll lose weight. They're located all over the country

yes arrnmy is correct: if you fail your apft you will get flagged, have mandatory pt plus you will not be allowed to attend any tdy and return.

i failed my run (newly diagnosed arthritis in my bloody hip, i thought i had a wee bit of the sciatica, hehe) and my short course paperwork was tossed (i had wanted to go to fort sam for the tncc and c4 course before my deployment. sigh....)

They will not send you home if you don't meet tape or can't pass the APFT. Within about a week after arriving you will be weighed, from what I saw a lot of us had to be taped. For our class we took the APFT exactly a week after getting to Fort Sam, about 40% of the class failed, the number grew larger when the reservist joined us 3 weeks later. If your a no-go (fail) on the height/weight/tape and/or APFT you will be required to attend remedial PT (physical training). Normal PT for us was M/W/F but with remedial it became M-F, so everyday except for the weekend. Remedial did help a lot of people to pass whatever they were a no-go on but if you go in totally out of shape and just started running and so on, you'll see improvements but probably not enough to actually get a "go" (pass).

I did see a lot of favoritism with how the APFT was administered, without bashing I will say this. There were people who worked their butts off while in remedial to eventually pass either weight/tape or/and APFT and there were some who, because they were Majors, barely put in the effort. Yet, they miraculously got a "go" when they could barely run around the track for 1 lap. Anyhow, if you don't pass height/weight/tape or the APFT by the end of OBLC they might hold you at Fort Sam for an extra 30 days or they'll just send you to your duty station flagged. You have about 4 times to take the APFT (within the week after reporting, when the reservist gets there, a week after coming back from the field, and once during the nursing track)

BTW, before I reported to Sam Houston I was pretty excited to think that I was going to lose some weight and get in better shape. The reality is that 2 months is just not enough time to go from being completely inactive to seeing results, so PLEASE don't let your recruiter tell you otherwise (like mines did) get in shape before you even take your oath or sign that contract. A lot of us actually gained weight being in the field for 3 weeks!!!

If you want to go overseas to germany or what not and do not pass the apft you wont go there. you will go to wherever they need you. Thats what I was told when I picked an overseas assignment.

When I went to OBC I was in the Reserves.

I didn't pass my weight, in fact towards the end of my time I actually put on weight (gosh, I just L O V E those MRE's especially anything with chicken)

At graduation time I did not receive my diploma. I had 90 days to lose the weight, which I did and when I sent in proof I finally received my OBLC diploma

Your AER will reflect that you were a NO GO and that you DID NOT meet Army Standards (as to Hgt/Wgt)

I agree with the other members of this forum that have posted (zombie, arRNmy) and I most certainly concur with Dee Tonia: I have seen "light" COL's pass their Hgt/Wgt and never get taped and they are obviously overweight for their height (Active side of the house)

What worries me is the APFT. I can do the pushups and sit ups. (just barely) But its the run. I need to do 2 miles in 17 min. I just started about a month ago and it took me 22 min the first week. then 21 etc. I been improving a min a week or so. I hate runnning it sucks! Why can't we just run a mile like the air force lol. (I think their standards are lower.) anyways. Im down to 18 min and 40 secs! just a bit more.

Is the PT in OBC going to be enough to get me to pass in order to go overseas? I hope so.

You'll do fine. Your close enough to get it down, just keep putting in the work. Like I said PT helped a lot of people who were close enough. When I went I was almost 12 minutes off my run time (I'm just not a runner, I actually started running before I got there), at the end of OBLC I was about 4 minutes off. Just like with anything challenging, you get an adrenaline rush when doing the events; before the APFT it was demonstrated to us how to do push-ups and sit-ups, unfortunately for me I was doing them both wrong but as it turned out I was a go for those events when I tested. So it's definitely feasible for you to pass.

And fyi, starting 2010 that test has to be passed twice a year.

Well I know for the navy. That is what has been holding up my commission. I have been approved since May & I met under 36% body fat at MEPS but they sent a letter stating that they wanted me under 33% body fat :no: before I commission. They stated that alot of new officers arrive to ODS right at there max and they gain weight or don't loose the weight and that the new policy states that you will either be held back another class or flagged when you go to your new duty station. They would not even let me commisssion until the supervisor at my recruitment office signed off that I was under 33% body fat. So, I am now 31% body fat and just got signed off this week. That delayed me many ODS classes but you don't want that pressure on you on top of everything else. I actually hope to get under 1-2 % before I go just in case I get a jerk who measures me and don't care of my beyonce curves. :D
