stethoscopes

Nursing Students Student Assist

Hi,

I just started an accelerated BSN program, and my lab instructor recommended that we go out and get a "GOOD" stethoscope, spending about $100. This caused a little debate among my classmates (some are CNAs). I was hoping someone might be able to suggest a either a good brand or model, and whether or not need to spend that much.

Thanks!!!

Hey everyone! I'm looking into buying a new stethoscope now that I've finished my first semester of nursing school. I was hoping for some advice on a good scope although not more than say $75. I wasn't really happy with the quality of the one I used this semester. Appreciate any inuput.

go buy littmann

whatever you do decide to buy, check out stuff on ebay....I scored a nice littman, brand new at half-price!

I have a littman Master Classic II and I love it!

Speaking from 25 yrs of experience.....unless you have some beacon on that very expensive stethoscope I would go for a cheaper model. Doctors are notorious for walking off with Littman's.....saying it was their's.

I love my Littman. My father bought my first one as a nursing gradution present. I love the single tube, it makes it lighter and less noise is noted. The single bell is nice because you can change what you are listening to without changing the bell (master classic II). Whatever you do, DO NOT GET BLACK! It will disappear faster that a diet coke in the lounge fridge. I got the ugliest color I could. Then I wrote my name on the bell with black sharpie. I still have to chase down doc's sometimes with my Magenta stethoscope. It's good for a laugh!

Go check out GRx stethoscopes on e-bay. Priced right and work great.

I have a Littman Classic II SE and HATE it. I cant hear well with it. My other co-workers have the same complaints about theirs. One nurse has a cheap DRG and I tried it, its great. Going to buy one. Best advice is to go to a store and try them out before buying one.

I also have a Littman Cardiology, I bought it because I thought it was the best, it is the worst. I can't hear well with it. My fellow nursing students commented on the same thing with some of their Littman's and ended up using a really cheap one that was so much better.

I have a littman and I love it:)

I have the one sided diaphrm that you can also use as the bell. Depending how tight you have it to the skin. Anyhow..Mine is purple, I would stay away from black like everyone said. My friend just got her black littman gaffled from a doctor who claimed it was his.

For the people who did not like the littman , did you put it backwards? Because if you do, that is one reason I can think of why you could not hear anything. When I first purchased my Littman, my husband tried and could not hear, I told him to turn it the other side and he was able to hear.

Almost every single Doctor at the hospital is using a Littman and most of the nurses. I have never heard anyone have problem with Littman.

Specializes in geriatric, hospice, med/surg.

Looks like Littman has the house vote! I say LITTMAN!
