why does the nursing profession have a lot of drama?

Published

Why is it in this profession, that there is a lot of drama going on? It seems like every week, something new pops...It is not like a regular 8 hour job where you can just go home and kick back...

I hate to break this to ya, but it isn't just nurses. My husband worked in retail in college, same thing there. He works at the post office now (with MEN, might I add) same thing there. I worked as a corrections nurse, not only was there drama among the ranks of deputies, you had all the crap with adultry. So I guess a better question may be why do people have so much drama in their lives?

Beats me. The thing is very little of it actually has to do with patient care.

Why can't you just go home and kick back?

I've learned to leave the drama at work.

What do you mean by "drama" anyway? Is this another "why are nurses such gossiping backstappers, catty etc." thread. Or do you mean medical drama - codes, bleedouts, MI's, crashing patients, demanding customers and family members and such?

Life and death. It doesn't get much more dramatic than that. We see lots of stuff. It's hard not to let it become part of who we are. Turning it on and off like a light switch is a skill I envy.

Have you ever had a job which was so absolutely dull that an hour felt like eternity? Drama is one of the perks of our profession. Oh the stories we can tell.

Oh, I've worked in MANY professions, both with men and women and a nice mix of them all...

There is drama everywhere, it just ain't nursing.

I leave the drama at work where it belongs....sure it's fun to come home and tell the hubby....you'll never guess what so and so did....then I'm done and on to other things in my life, rather than work.

I haven't worked many jobs (armed force, food service, garbage disposal, computer tech support and now nurse) - but I'm inclined to believe what you stated there is very true.

There are unpleasant, counter productive workers - prone to gossip, affairs and inappropriate behavior in every profession I've worked in.

Nursing, sadly, is no exception.

All we can do, is try to contribute to the solution rather than the problem. Leave the place better than what we found it when we arrived.
