Grand Canyon University RN to BSN Reviews

Nursing Students School Programs Nursing Q/A

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

Thanks Rob!

I would love to be able to write about how I see things in my practice and so far I have done a mix of some more personal type posts like that along with some posts with interesting or helpful info I found online that actually did enchance what we were learning. Not with this instructor! First personal type post I made she commented in the forum and asked me to cite/reference (and also did it to everyone else and then made a general post that every post must have cite/reference).

Do you want me to quote and reference myself?!! Yes I get what she is after about not just posting dumb things but my stuff ain't dumb! Haha! My post was about how I actually spent half a day at one of the resources for mothers that another student was posting about - chose to go to the local office in connection with a ADN nursing school project. I posted about how valuable, great info, informed stafff, blah, blah, blah. Instructor then tells me to cite/reference! The student's post I replied to already referenced the resource. OK well then, "blah, blah, blah" (Me, 2015). That's what I wanted to do!! All I could do was say "For additional information regarding xxxx or for locations, please see www.xxxx.org." She then commented and said great reference! Geez, the website was already in other student's post.....

Woohoo - no Statistics for me - had it way back when got my BS back in 1986 and luckily it was accepted by GCU. Just hope that when I get to Nursing Research and Capstone I know what I am doing cuz I sure don't remember nothin' from my stats class!

I had to smile while reading your posts. I felt the same about the set up of the discussion questions. I had 3 classes so far that required 4 days participation not just the 3. I kind of got used to it and it isn't a big deal for me anymore. I post my initial DQ posts on Monday. Tuesday I post 2 responses to DQ1. Wednesday I post once to DQ1 and once to DQ 2. And Thursday I post twice to DQ2. After that I do not check in again unless I have to hand something in or participate in the CLC project. I learned it doesn't matter as long as the required days are met.

I too post 800-1200 word DQ topics. I have gotten really good at it. I never give a reference in the DQ responses because I never make a new point, I just talk about how I see this in my practice or how the topic affects me. Never had a problem with this. Finding references for a DQ topic is easy, just quote the weekly lecture notes and the class textbook. Done..... Wait till the dry discussion posts in Statistics! Just do what you need to get by there.....

Good luck. If I can do it, then you can...

I did the same thing Rob. I'd do everything in my power to not have to cite another dq response. LoL

Rob, I admire you. Having three classes with four participation days, you talk about those classes with such ease! You probably think why are people like me whining here!?! )))) Reading your post I understood how true is statement "if you can't change the situation, change your attitude to it!" LOL!

Hi Prism! Thanks! I posted and then read )))) this is not encouraging. . . When I saw those FIVE points I almost fell down from my chair! I think it is not fair, so much work and so little points  I liked 15 for each DQ more :cat:

...wait til you get to Cap and you spend 3 days on a 1500w paper that's worth 40 points.... :x3:

Or the 14 point Powerpoint. I honestly didn't put very much effort into it because I was short on time and it was only 1.4% of the total grade.

So happy the Capstone is over for me :)

Now ya'll are just scaring me...

I am a horrible paper writer; I'd rather complete math problems all day. I have writer's block until the time the paper is almost due!! :-/

You will fall into a paper groove and the rubric and criteria help you form a paper. I was worried about the same thing and I had a difficult time keeping the word count down.

Don't know if I deserve admiration... I just learned to sit and do those posts. I can sit and do 2 discussion responses in about 15 minutes, just do it. The initial DQ posts take me 2-3 hours which isn't fun but I do it on Sunday instead of sleeping in..... I just cut and paste it on Monday.

Don't think this at all. I have my problems with homework. I definitely have my demons. I did learn that this is how it is so just figure out how to fit it in your life. I am just as burnt out as everyone else that is/has been at my place.

Like tokmon stated, you do get in a paper frame of mind. I hate papers, but have gotten pretty good. My problem is finding the time to sit and do it in the proper frame of mind.

Don't be scared. It can be done...

Amanda112martin, I see you only have 3 posts on the forum. If you post more than 15 total you can have access to private messages. I would love to hear who the instructor is you are talking about. (If you want to share). It is best to share this information on private messages which requires 11 more forum posts!!!

Thanks Puddles!

All I can say is I hope this chick ain't teaching no other class (and I will run like crazy if I see her name).

So nice to be able to vent on here.

Ro

I was the same way about the one instructor I had that had us using citations for every response. I will not forget her name, nor will I want to be in one of her classes again.

I will admit in regards to responses to the DQ. I have discovered for me I can actually get 2 different days done on one day. All postings are done per Arizona time zone. I am 15 hours ahead, so at 1500 during my day it is 0000 in Arizona. I like to get mine completed right away. I run into the difficulty that there is not much to respond to, so have to wait until later in my week to respond.
